So as an experiment I brewed a SMaSH English IPA using Maris Otter pale malt and Endeavour hops. OG 1.06 and IBU 50. Turned out terrible and I feel I have to warn anyone who plans on bittering with this hop.

The bitterness is incredibly harsh and the beer undrinkable. If anyone has had a different experience with this hop I would like to hear. I don't think I made a mistake in my calculations, since I've been pretty bang on target until now.

So harsh it's undrinkable doesn't sound like something you can blame on the hop - I'd double check your recipe, your water etc.

I must I don't think I've ever used Endeavour for bittering myself but I've certainly had commercial beers that used her and I don't recall any particular issue. She has got some Target parentage, but it's fairly diluted.

I live in Cape Town. I use Newlands spring water. This water is used by our main brewery (SAB) untreated.

Boil size: 20 liters (5.3 g)
Final vol: 16 litres (4.2 g)
Hop schedule:
15g (0.5 oz) 60 min
20g (0.7 oz) 30 min
10g (0.35 oz) 10 min
10g (0.35 oz) flame out

Grist was 4 kg (8.8 lbs) Maris Otter pale malt

OG: 1.060

Yeast: S-04
