Is this a problem at all? I know the pressure relief valve is convenient, but is it absolutely necessary?

Yes, it is necessary, and all kegs have one. Some just aren't manually operated. If you are referring to pin lock kegs, they have a static relief valve that will blow if pressure gets too high, but you can't use it to vent gas manually if that's what you're getting at. In this case, you can simply depress the poppet on the gas in port to vent gas when needed. Not a big deal.

I've got 2 without them. If i want to release the pressure i just pop off the gas line and depress the poppet with a screwdriver. I agree they are extrememly convenient to have tho!

edit: exactly what he said above
