We have an annual competition among clubs in our area where we pick 5 major BJCP categories that are accepted each year. This year one of the categories is 2015 - 22 Strong American Ale. I have been trying to come up with a recipe to throw into the 22B American Strong Ale subcategory, but the guidelines are pretty vague as far as what is "to style".

Recipe: American Strong
Style: American Strong Ale

Estimated OG: 1.071 SG
Estimated FG: 1.017 SG
Estimated Color: 13.4 SRM
Estimated IBU: 74.7 IBUs
Estimated ABV: 7.4%
Boil Time: 60 Minutes

Ingredients:
------------
13 lbs Golden Promise (91.2%)
12 oz Honey Malt (5.3%)
8 oz Special B Malt (3.5%)

Boil
1oz - Millenium @ 60

Whirlpool - 15 Minutes
2oz - Cascade
2oz - Lemon Drop
1oz - Amarillo
1oz - Centennial

Denny's Favorite (Wyeast Labs #1450)

Thoughts? Basically, I tried to make something that seemed like it could work as an American Barleywine but not quite strong enough.

That looks about right. Maybe toss in a small bit of chocolate malt or roasted barley to give it a hint of roast. Maybe change the bittering hop to something like Chinook to give it some bite.

Not a bad idea, you think it'll make enough of a difference? I have an ounce of Millennium just taking up space in the freezer.
