    Controling hot break boil over

+1 for using air. I started with the temp turn down, but found it was difficult to find that sweet spot of boil verses no boil. I went to a spray bottle but found it wore my fingers out spraying frenetically as the hot break suddenly jumped up. I now use a vacuum motor in reverse. Hook...

    Pro & Cons of Conicals

Seems all the pros and cons have been amply covered in this thread. But still hard to sort it all out. If I had to list one reason I prefer my FastFerment conicals over the glass carboys I used to use, it would be . . . Safety - I always feared lifting or moving a glass carboy. And after I...

    Motorizing my Barley Crusher

Here is my crusher. It has a 1/6 Hp motor rated at 4.2 amps and running at 1725 rpm. The drive pulley is 1.5" diameter measured on the outside edges. The crusher pulley is 8 1/4" diameter. Since the drive shaft on The Barley Crusher is only 3/8", finding a pulley that is 8 1/4" with a 3/8"...

    Setup for a SYL-2352

Paul, We might know each other. I'm a member of the St. Louis Brews and was the Brewmeister for a few years back. I'm out in west county (Clarkson & Manchester). Kim Gardner [email protected]

    Setup for a SYL-2352

jeffmeh, Thanks for the tip on the Electric Brewery. That is a pretty good plain-English explanation. wisconsinitebrewer, thanks for mentioning that you left the other settings as is.

    Setup for a SYL-2352

My apologies in advance, but I have searched every post I can find and still can't figure out all the settings on my SYL-2352. I have two tanks - HLT and Boil Kettle. Simple set up - no HERMS, no RIMS. I want to heat the HLT to a set temp with the PID. Then, after mashing, I flip a switch...

    FastFerment - My Experience

I bought the FastFerment on a whim. And I am very satisfied so far. Here are some thoughts, ideas and comments for others who may be interested or may already have purchased one or two or more. I brew with a ten gallon electric brewery consisting of a half-barrel keg as my HLT, a 70 quart...

    FastFerment Conical Guide

My experience with the FastFerment is a bit different. Not to challenge what you experienced, but to offer my experience, here are some comments: "My first brew with the FastFerment was a nightmare. . . . the yeast flocculated quickly and clogged the collection bulb, valve, and neck." I...

    Closed-system pressurized fermentation technique!

I'm in the middle of filtering from my primary into my serving keg. But my filter gets totally clogged from the trub. I first pumped some of the trub into sludge bucket to get it partly clear, but there is still a lot of trub coming through. Enough to clog a 5 micron filter. How do you all...

    Closed-system pressurized fermentation technique!

OnNe more question . . . what is the best way to oxegenate the wort before (or when) you put it into the fermenter. Right now I either shake the glass carboy or run small pump with a stone on the end inserted into the wort.

    Boiling the wort chiller

I certainly see a drop in temp when I put it in at 15 minutes. Usually stops the boil entirely until it gets back up to temp. But my chiller has a complex wrap of pipes and I can't get all the water out of it. So heating up water is part of the problem. Hadn't thought of putting it in early...

    Closed-system pressurized fermentation technique!

Thanks for all the tips. I'm going to assemble some parts and give it a try. Tegra's drawing is helpful. As is typcial, I'll probably come up with my own wild ass design and go from there. That's the fun of this hobby,

    Closed-system pressurized fermentation technique!

I could use some help with a simple question about this process. I went through the first 200 posts and cannot find a clear answer. I'm using 5 gal. corny kegs, ten gallon batches and plan to put the wort into three kegs. I will put a spunding valve on the gas-in post. Leave it furment...

    Brew Room Build

Go electric. It may seem like it is difficult to figure out, but a little homework and help from the guys on this site, you can do it. Heck, i did it. And never read a schematic before I started. Propane inside is not an option (without an awesome hood/ventilation). Also, a floor drain...

    Quick carbonation technique question

If the kegs were not cold, you won't get much CO2 to mix with the beer. The colder the beer the more CO2 it will accept.

    Hot break

To keep from boiling over, I used to spray water on the foam. Lately I have been using my vacuum - turned the hose around to blow air - and blow the air over the foam. It seems to break the foam down much faster than the water did. And since the hot break foam will suddenly rise up, a quick...

Difference between flameout and aroma steep

Flameout is when you turn off the boil and then add your addition. Usually hops added for extra flavor just before fermentation. Not sure what you mean by "aroma steep".

Voltage at Element but No Heat

Good idea on the heavy duty switch. But I like doing just as you said, switching the PID output on or off. The take away for others (and for me) trying to diagnose electric problems: Always disconnect your wires. If you don't you could be reading backfeed from other components, like me...
