Received my water report from Ward Labs.

I've moved and my last few beers that I've made with strictly my water here have been lacking. Suspecting a water issue, I had a brewing water test done by Ward labs. Would you think I'd be getting an off flavor based on the water results? What recommendations would you suggest? Thanks for...

    Need help/suggestions with gas fittings.

I bought this rig from someone who half assed it in places. I get to deal with all of that... Anyway, this is currently a huge fire hazard. I have been brewing before when the fitting popped out and became a flame thrower. The fitting simply pushes in. It never did screw in correctly. What...

General advice needed(regarding new to me brew rig)

I've been brewing 5 1/2 years using the very simple cooler mash tun, boil kettle method a lot of us started with. Has served me well but I wanted to upgrade to some automation and less lifting on the cheap. Didn't have time to build a new setup from scratch and this deal came along so I jumped...

Been lazy, hops are in piles.

I've never had a good harvest on my hops and I've been following the same routine. Let the first shoots grow, trim all the others. Have been seeing some people(all?) benefit from cutting first growth, and allowing the second round to be the producers. I know that's partially for timing the...

Going to try cider again. Does this look ok?

I've made cider in 1 gallon batches with ok success. Never got the really apple-y flavor. This time around I want to go 5 gallons. A friend of mine made a cyser (a LOT of honey and brown sugar, and 50 cinnamon sticks!) It actually turned out ok, but I want a lower abv version. Here's what...

Is this BeerSmith calculation correct? (infusion temp)

I'm entering all my data in for my hefe brew and going to try a step mash. 113 for 30 minutes 9.9 qts water 156 for 30 minutes 10 qts water 168 mash out When I enter the details, BS gives me an error on the second step saying I need to add more water so that my infusion temp isn't over...

Last minute BJCP certified judges needed.

Our homebrew club (ATF) is having an AHA sanctioned competition this Saturday. We need some certified judges for sure. The location will be at the new brewery (Beer Army) in Trenton, NC. There *may* an incentive (free night's stay at a hotel) to encourage participation. If anyone is...

What's a good asking price for this mash tun??

I have a 10 gallon Rubbermaid mash tun that I built. Stainless steel false bottom, ball valve and brass hardware, used once. I have someone interested in it, but I haven't told him a price yet. Not sure what is a fair price to ask. Thanks

Stainless Steel shank with residue in nipple??

There is a white residue in the nipple portion of this shank I bought brand new. Supposed to stainless throughout. Looks like a corrosion of sorts. Should I be concerned about this? I'm trying to get in touch with the manufacturer(Krome Dispense), but figured I'd ask here too.

How can I protect the name of my future brewery?

I may or may not ever use it, but just in case. ;) How would one go about locking down a name?

Need help locating a sealing washer for mash tun.

Trying to finish up this mash tun and I'm having a tough time finding a proper washer. Would like for it to be food safe, and it doesn't need to impart any flavors. Rough dimensions are .65" id, 1.25-1.5" od. Thickness doesn't matter a whole lot. I checked my local places, including...

    Found my first wild hops!

:) I'm not expecting much out of these but I think it's super cool regardless. This is just one part of a bine that I broke off to bring home. I'd like to id these if possible. How do you go about making a "tea" with them. I saw some threads where people mentioned doing so, but did...

4" diameter SS(or chrome) draft tower cap.

I prefer SS but may go with chrome depending on price. Thanks. :mug:

    Perhaps a dumb question...

Just got a small chest freezer with a johnson thermostat on it and am going to use it for fermentation. Is there any danger from leaving an active fermentation and resulting CO2 in a closed environment such as you would find in a freezer? I didn't put anything on the lid so I assume that...

    Enter our homebrew competition!

Alcohol Through Fermentation(ATF) is hosting its 2nd annual BJCP sanctioned competition this July 27th, the Crystal Coast Brew Off. We are in need of many more entries so don't be shy! It will be hosted at the new Beer Army Combat Brewery, but if you can't make it, you can still enter your...

Where can I post info about our club's homebrew comp?

We are in need of applicants for our BJCP sanctioned comp. We are also having a raffle with lots of nice stuff to give away. Our guy in charge of soliciting prizes is doing an awesome job! Anyway, where is the proper forum to post the info? I don't want to limit it to the NC subforum, but...

    stems/stalks and plastic in grains?

Just mashed in and noticed these little shreds of plastic(like thin sheet plastic) in the grains. Like the same size you'd find paper after it's been through a shredder. The longest piece I saw was about 3.5 inches. The smaller ones I picked out were about 3/4". I picked out a few and said...
