    Bay Area beer reccomendations

I definitely recommend Bear Republic. Fantastic beer selection, usually 16 taps going mostly with beer they do not distribute outside the restaurant. Downtown Healdsburg is beautiful too.

First yeast starter... wish me luck :)

I wouldn't use the airlock either. Just cover the top with aluminum foil. Airlocks prevent air from entering and allowing oxygen to enter the flask is a positive for your starter.

All Grain and BIAB - more carbonation?

I recently started brewing BIAB, and have 4 brews under my belt. It seems that the beer gets noticeably more carbonated using the 4 oz. of corn sugar per 5 gal batch. I don't think it's infection because this just started with BIAB after doing extract for a year. I also don't think it's...

What do you eat while brewing?

I used to forget to eat and would suddenly be starving. I snack on Trader Joe's mac n cheese when the boil starts going now.

The great "What size kettle" question

I bought the heavy duty kettle from homebrewstuff.com. It came with a valve and thermometer. It's great.

If you could spend $100-150 for your first upgrade..

I say get a larger kettle and outdoor burner. You can experiment with all-grain using BIAB. This is exactly what I did recently and I am not going back to extract!

Trader Joe's Vintage Ale - label removal

Around my area (Northern California) Trader Joe's sells Mission Street ales, which is a contract brew with Firestone Walker. $5.99 buys a six-pack of great IPA.

The great "What size kettle" question

I just had this debate a few months ago. I decided to start using BIAB and needed a new kettle. I went with 15 gal and do not regret it. It is large, and that makes it a little harder to store and clean. But I can't imagine it's much more difficult than 10 gallons. The main reason I went...

    Newb, High Gravity IPA

Vienna does need to be mashed. Try another specialty grain. Once you substitute that everyone else looks good to me.

    Newb, High Gravity IPA

That does seem like low IBUs, but it's probably because with your low boil volume and high gravity (made much higher during the boil by doing partial extract), you will get very low hop utilization. Check out How To Brew for a better understanding...

    Newb, High Gravity IPA

Just for fun I ran your recipe through BeerSmith. It almost exploded. If you do full boil, you're looking at a calculated 242 IBUs. If you're doing a partial boil, 125 IBUs. Recipe Specifications -------------------------- Boil Size: 7.13 gal Post Boil Volume: 5.30 gal Batch Size...

    Newb, High Gravity IPA

Something seems fishy about your IBUs. That is a TON of Chinook hops. I recently made a Chinook IPA with 0.5oz 60 min, 1oz 30min, and 1.5oz at 5min and I believe the IBU calc was 78! I love Chinook hops so that recipe looks good to me. It may be a bit too unbalanced with the hops though, I...

What are the cheapest reusable commercial beer bottles you know of?

My favorite bottles to reuse are Sierra Nevada and Lagunitas. The labels peel of easily after soaking in warm water for a couple minutes. I can get a 24-pack of Sierra Nevada beer for $22 at Costco. Or I can get a 24-pack of empties from my LHBS for $10. Apples to apples, I'd rather buy the...

    Oak in a barley wine?

I had it ferment for 4 weeks in primary then racked to another carboy to bulk age for six months. I like the suggestion of splitting it and only oaking a portion. I regret not doing that. One, because it would be great to have something to compare the oaking to ceteris paribus. Two...

BIAB 7.5 gal brew kettle big enough for 5 gal batch?

When I decided to go from extract to BIAB, I bought a 15 gallon heavy duty kettle. I often brew high-gravity and wanted the option of also making 10 gallon batches. The pros/cons are extreme: 1. It's super high quality and volume so far has never been a concern. I love using it. 2. It's...

    Oak in a barley wine?

I used an ounce for six months in an American BW (FG ~1.090) and it was way too strong. I recommended boiling the oak chips and using .25 to 0.5 oz. I simply didn't do any research.
