    Blackberry Wheat

I'm brewing a blackberry wheat for my sister's wedding. I plan on mashing very high so the final beer isn't too dry. I was hoping to make it 5-5.5% ABV, but I'm not brewing a 5.5gal batch with 4-5lbs of malt. Unfortunately the can of blackberry puree says SG 1.036-1.057 so I may have a 6.5%...

    Session Nelson Sauvin Rye Ale

I opened a package of Nelson Sauvin hops the other day and new I needed to be drinking something with them in it as soon as possible. The only beer I ever had with Nelson Sauvin is Widmer's Drifter Pale Ale. I have heard good things about Alpine Beer's Nelson Rye; so I decided to make a...

    Arduino questions (mash temp controller)

I am working on an Arduino based mash temperature controller. I have an Arduino UNO R3, RGB Shield Kit, TMP36 Analog Temp. Sensor, a solid state relay and Bucket Heater. What I would like to do is have the buttons on the RGB Shield Kit control the mash temperature and mash time. I want to...

    So many hops, no ideas...

Hello, I have a crap ton of hops, and I keep planning new recipes and they always seem to involve the same few varieties (amarillo, columbus, simcoe, cascade, centennial). I like hoppy beers (APA,IPA,IIPA) the most, but I only get to brew like once a month so I don't want to just throw crap...

Any software reach water temps correctly?

I'm now on brew 15-17 and I still fail at getting my temperatures exact without adding hot or cold water. Yes I preheat my 10gal cooler mash tun, and if I don't I know it drops 7degrees with initial mash water. BeerSmith fails me 99.99% of the time, so I have gotten use to adding water...

    Millionth Water Profile Report...

Hello, Just got my results from Ward Labs. I notice some sites talk about CaCO3, I see "Total Hardness CaCO3," and "Total Alkalinity CaCO3." These values are quite different, which am I concerned with? or both? The calculator asks for HCO3, but you use CaCO3 to adjust...

    Barley Crusher Gap Adjustment

Google failed me so I have a question about the barley crusher I got today. The one adjustment knob can spin without loosening the lock screws, making the gap uneven. The screws to "lock" it in are tight. The other adjust. knob locks just fine. Am I missing something obvious? -Thanks

American IPA with Wyeast 1098 British Ale?

A couple of IPA's I enjoyed a lot, talk about using a nice fruity yeast, so I thought I would try the same. I have Wyeast 1098 British Ale and Wyeast 1272 American Ale 2. I have a hoppy pale ale conditioning with WLP001 already, a stout fermenting on WLP004 Irish Ale, Hop Rod Rye clone...

    Citra at Hops Direct

Well I don't need more hops, but this addictive hobby made me buy more. I bought 1lb of Citra Leaf hops for $13.50. Also grabbed 1lb each of pellet Saphir, Nugget, Magnum(GR) just because if I was going to pay shipping might as well get everything I want. If only they sold Simcoe!

    sparge water temperature....

I made an Ode to Arthur today. Mashed 2.00qt a lb @ 152F, hit my temp, vorlaufed, drained. Add my 3.06gal of sparge water at 186.5F. This raised the 150F grains to 159F. Do i have to sparge with boiling water? Had similar results on my last batch (but on that one I only heated the water to...

    Dark Belgian Wheat?

I was wondering if anyone ever made a "Donker Witbier" (Dark Witbier)? Essentially a dunkelweizen with Belgian Wit yeast? I just made a standard witbier and just wondered if a dark belgian wheat would be as delicious as a dunkelweizen is compared to a regular weizen. There seems to be no BJCP...

    Single brew pot possible?

I have been wanting to try an all-grain batch and have been wondering if I could heat the initial 1.25qts per pound in my 30qt brewpot and use a 5gal paint strainer bag. Then after the initial 150-155F 60 minutes remove the bag of grain, add the sparge water, heat to the 170-175 and then add...
