    Vacuum Sealers

I just sent back the handheld FoodSaver system with the zip lock looking bags to Amazon. I had a problem with the bags letting air back in after putting in the freezer. After contacting Foodsaver they told me that the valves are not rated to go in the freezer and would leak, would have been nice...

What are your absolute favorite recipes??

I'm looking for a new recipe for my next batch and figured you guys could make some good suggestions. My last two batches turned out great, one was a mexican lager I found on the web and the other was a batch of Lake Walk Pale Ale which was my favorite pale ale to date and will overtake Ed...

Does dry hopping in the keg make your beer cloudy?

I just dry hopped for the first time (Lake Walk Pale Ale) with Simcoe and Amarillo hops. I used a stainless mesh dry hopper from Arbor Fab http://arborfab.com/ocart/index.php?route=product/product&product_id=67 which work out amazing. I was dry hopping right after the transfer out of the primary...

Will a standard knot hold ok with baling twine?

I've got the thicker baling twine they sell at TSC and I put up my strings Sunday. I have them run at about a 45 degree angle from tie out stakes in the ground up the eye bolts in trees about 15 feet up. I'm not sure what you call the knot I made besides its just a standard knot. I put about 5-6...

Anyone lager the entire time in the primary?

I just racked a lager into my secondary/cornies after 4 weeks. I typically rack my ales from the primary after 2-3 weeks but stretched this batch out a bit longer since I was busy and the weather was bad. I was wondering if anyone has ever tried to leave a lager in the primary for a full 2...

Opinions on Stainless Mesh Hop Spiders

So I've never made an attempt to keep pellet hops out of my primary but occasionally my dip tube gets stuck when trying to drain the kettle which is a PITA because I have to break out the siphon which is a lot slower. I also usually lose at least 1/2 gallon of beer because my dip tube doesn't...

    Dry hopping in the primary.

So I think my next batch of beer will be 10 gallons of Dude's Lakewater Pale Ale split into 2 better bottles. It specifies 2oz of hops to dry hop into the secondary. Typically I'll ferment in the primary for 2 weeks then transfer to a corny (sort of a secondary) and carbonate/serve. I don't...

Does a longer stir bar get thrown less?

So I have a shorter stir bar (about 1") and I've been doing large 1 gallon starters in an old pickle jar. The first time I had to turn down the speed so it wouldn't get thrown. Now on my second starter with the same bar and jar I can't get the bar to stay spinning more than a couple seconds. I...

Does flake corn create a ultra thich and sticky mash??

I'm curious if 1.25 qt/lb is enough water to mash about 40% flaked corn without getting really thick and sticky? My last batch was 50% flaked wheat mashed at 1.25 qt/lb and it was thick as hell.

How good/bad do you think this crush is??

So I've just gotten back into brewing after a 2 year break and am getting horrible efficiencies. I remember getting well into the 80%'s but now am not even getting out of the 60%'s. I've used the same online brew store for all my pre-milled ingredients both before and after the break. I've also...

Opinions on how to string up my hop plants.

I've posted a couple threads about getting started so far, much thanks to everyone that's responded, especially Nagmay whom I even pestered over PM a couple times. Current setup: I have a southern facing slope on my land that I have 9 planting locations set up. I am going to use 3 medium...

    Help with reccomended soil mix.

So I'm getting exited. I found a guy that has 50+ vines or so that is weeding down his collection and is selling me some good sized crowns, he says they're about 4-5 times as large as the crowns Great Lakes Hops sells. Here's what I'm getting. Cascade (full crown) Chinook (full crown) Mt...

What do you think of this mix of hops for growing..

I posted a thread about suggestions for growing being limited to 3 varieties. I'm thinking of doing a greater variety than I originally considered. I'm looking at getting some larger established crowns from someone I found. Here's what he has available. Cascade Chinook Mt. Hood...

If you could only have 3 kinds of hops what would they be?

Ok so I'm about to embark on the home grown hop journey but don't want a ton of different kinds to keep up with and store. I'm thinking 3 varieties. Here's what I need. One hop for basic pale ales, I brew Ed's Haus Pale ale quite a bit. I'm thinking Cascade is the easy choice here. One...

Will this work well for growing?

I've got a very steep hill behind my house, part has grass and a small section is too steep to mow, at least 30 degrees. I was thinking of putting a "t" post in the ground at the bottom and another at the top then running a heavy twine or wire between the two to keep the hops elevated...

    Need an "island" lager recipe.

Can anyone point me in the direction of a good light "island" lager recipe. You know the kind you find on a Caribbean island and drink on the beach. Something that is in the ballpark of the following beers. -Dos Equis (green bottle) -Red Stripe -Carib Lager -Presidente Dos Equis green...

    Frozen solid kegs whoops...

I had a 5-6 week old 10 gallon batch of Dead Guy ale that I transferred to kegs this last Sunday. I put them back in the fermentation chamber and set it to 40 and hooked one up to CO2 to carbonate. What I screwed up was I forgot to put the probe in the chamber with the kegs, it was sitting on...

    Pacman yeast is a beast!

Man, I got 2 smack packs of pacman and did 2 small starter step ups for a 10 gallon batch of dead guy I'm making, it ended up 1.058 OG. I finished brewing at about 5pm on Sunday and I had really good bubble action the next morning before I went to work. Under 12 hours to a nice fermentation is...

Most accurate Dead Guy Ale recipe??

What would you guys say is the most accurate Dead Guy Ale recipe?? I had it again tonight and gotta say its one of the best beers I've had. I'd really like to try a clone but get nervous since I brew 10 gallon and don't wanna be disappointed 10 gallons worth lol. Is the pacman yeast still...

    What are your BEST recipes!!

Ok so I've been brewing for about two years. I've had several brews that I've thought were really good. Lately I've been less than thrilled with the batches I've brewed. Some have been better than others but I want to brew some amazing batches. It probably hasn't helped that I'm getting more...
