For Sale ***FREE*** CA: San Joaquin to Bay Area: Fermentation Refrigerator

I have an older Amana refrigerator with a bottom freezer that I have been using for years as a fermentation fridge. It gets as low as 40°F. I use an inkbird temperature controller - it has worked fairly well. It could be stronger in this central valley heat when trying to cool off wort... Yes...

Excess fallout at bottom of fermenter on brew day

LOL! So not married. Putting a dark porter onto carpet with Nottingham yeast and a simple airlock. Recipe for disaster. I did that - plugged the airlock and then built up enough pressure to erupt - blowing off the stopper and hitting the ceiling. Fortunately it was in the kitchen. Lucky to...

    My range died...

KAB4. Bayou Classic. Been using it for years and the batches have grown to 25 gallons. Converted to natural gas - but the thing is capable of significant heat output. Just need a kettle 12" wide. Oh - and fix your stove.

    Fermentis S-04 High Attenuation

Finally had a chance to take a measurement of a different batch to compare the traditional glass hydrometer to the tilt. My graduated cylinder had cracked and had to get a different one...Not about to waste beer with a wide container! Tilt: 1.005 Normal: 1.011 So clean an floating in water...

    Fermentis S-04 High Attenuation

Good input about testing the tilt vs a regular hydrometer. I've only zeroed a clean tilt. Yes stuff sticks to them and that likely influences the angle of the float. Taste: It's still in the fermenter. Just started the cold crash a couple days ago. I'll keg this weekend.

    Fermentis S-04 High Attenuation

Seems odd that a yeast with an advertised attenuation of around 82% would have such a consistently high attenuation. Anyone else getting these kind of results? I like this yeast because of the high attenuation combined with the high degree of flocculation and resultant clarity. Beer: Basic IPA...

Best time/place to buy bulk hops?

I have been buying from Hopsdirect.com for a couple years now. I buy their 1 pound packages. I have mylar zip loc bags from amazon that I use for the hops. it's not a vac seal situation. I simply squeeze out the extra air in the bag. Most important part is keeping all of this in the freezer...

    Filtering post chill wort?

I received a wort pump for Christmas and now want to do everything possible with it because it’s new and different! So, does this make sense: Throw a biab into the pot at the last 5 min of boil to sterilize and then use the recirc pump to run all of the wort back through it to catch all the trub...

Almost Anything can be a Fermenter

It still isn't a good idea. just go to Amazon and get this https://www.amazon.com/Eagle-1601MB-Polyethylene-Lever-lock-Capacity/dp/B0025QI4XC/ref=sr_1_27?keywords=30+gallon+open+top&qid=1581393291&sr=8-27 $45, no odor and works great. In Action:

Almost Anything can be a Fermenter

2/10/2020 Update: Jalapeno pepper flavor in an IPA is not a positive addition. In fact....it's terrible. I shall slowly consume the 20 gallons of this slop as punishment for saving $30 vs buying a new container. (which I have now done). New is better. Jalapeno is not awesome.

    whirlpool adapter to welded fittings

I have a kettle with three welded 1/2" npt fittings. One is the out, one is the thermometer and the last one was capped. For christmas, I received a pump and wanted to give it a go for whirlpooling during cooling with an immersion cooler. So I installed a ball valve and barb fitting. I...

Almost Anything can be a Fermenter

You guys are hilarious! I agree that security of the positioning system is suspect. Those are simply milk crates. Milk crates are pretty stout by design - but mostly it's just gravity holding the whole thing together. It's also ridiculously top heavy. Don't push the the barrel...push the dolly...

    Grain Mill Drill Suggestions

Another user of the Harbor Freight paddle handle drill. It has plenty of torque. I'm using it on a MM2 Pro with the big wheels. It's flawless.

    Upgrade to Equipment/ Fermentation

Favorite things: 1. Tilt Hydrometer. If you have an old cell phone to upload the Bluetooth data via WiFi to google sheets.... awesome. 2. Kegs. Bottling sucks. 3. A french door or other bottom freezer as a temperature chamber. Ergonomically it's easier and the bottom of the fridge is higher...

Almost Anything can be a Fermenter

Been doing this for a couple years now. I've discovered that it takes an hour longer to brew 25 gallons of beer vs 5 gallons of beer. Obvious equipment scaling. This is an all grain, natural gas brew garage. 26 gallon kettle, twin 15 gallon mash tuns... My fermenters were always based on what...

Looking for Bench Capper (26mm standard)

Ever come down by Tracy? I have a classic steel unit with gears. I switched to kegs and flip tops. Your price is fine with me. It’s taking up space.
