    Reusing sacc/brett yeast cake

After kegging a saison that I'd brewed last year with a blend sacc and brett, I brewed another saison the very next day and racked right on top of the old yeast. I do this often with my ales to save money an they take off immediately. This one though shows no signs of active fermentation after 3...

    Cross pollination issue?

I grew 5 different varieties this past summer. All did very well and smelled green and resinous when they were young. When it came time to harvest however they all had an onion like smell. Afraid to use them and ruin a good beer, I vacuum packed them and threw them in the freezer. Talking with a...

When to harvest and use these hops?

What are some indicators that will let me know when it's time to harvest my hops? And when I do harvest, can I go straight from the vine into the kettle or is it better to dry them first?

Why is my Irish Red Ale from Northern Brewer So sweet?

Make sure to pitch enough yeast for that double IPA. I'd hate to see you have another sweet batch and get discouraged. When I first started I wished that I'd known how important temperature and pitching enough viable yeast were. You're also going to want a blow-off tube for that DIPA! :mug:

    It will still be beer?.

You should've hit it with some DME or corn sugar to boost the gravity. Wrap blankets around your MT next time to help insulate.

1.014 seems kind of high for a FG. What was your most recent gravity reading?

Funk In The House Part II

Nice breakdown. Part 1 inspired me to do this on a smaller scale with 3 one gallon fermenters and a 5 gallon "rainbow". Sampled a bit from each last week and they taste so good that I'm holding off on adding any fruit. Thanks for the inspiration and ideas!

    managing pests

oh great thanks. I'll look for the diatomaceous stuff too because I noticed ants yesterday in one of the hop beds.

    managing pests

Definitely yellow aphids after looking them up. Has anyone ever sprayed their hops with the water/dish soap/cayenne solution to combat aphids?

Here's a pic of the tiny yellow bugs. What are some common pests and how do you deal with them?

    managing pests

I'll post a pick tomorrow when it's daylight. Didn't think to check the underside of the leaves because I'd seen them on top of the leaves. these guys were really small. Like grains of sand or even smaller. I was only able to see them because I noticed leaf damage and really looked close.

    managing pests

This is my first year growing hops and today I noticed microscopic insects eating the leaves. They're white-ish /yellow-ish in color. Thankfully they haven't done too much damage yet but the plants are young and I'd like to keep the pests away as much as possible. Anyone know what kind of...

    Harvesting wild yeast, fermentation restarted

Very cool indeed, and a new spin on first posts asking "is my beer infected?"

    Schlenkerla Rauchbier Märzen = WOW

I've already told my wife that I'm treating her to lunch tomorrow at the bottle shop where I picked up the Schlenkerla. It looked like they had some of the helles lager and maybe one other style.

If you could create a new hop strain...

22%AA strain with bubblegum aroma sounds like a good idea. I'd use it in a "Big League Brew" Pale Ale. Or something very earthy with some dirt, wood, grass/hay character. Which I'm sure already exists
