This is my first attempt at developing a SCOBY. I do homebrew beer, but am transitioning into non-intoxicants. I'm familiar to brewing, but this is a whole new world. Tell me if this looks ok please. Color is hard to really see here, but it is primarily off white and fairly uniform. No...
Wee Heavy/ Scotch Ale is one of my favorite styles when done well. I have several brews of my own recipes under my belt, so I'm not looking for remedial advice, but I do seek advice or opinions from those familiar with the style as to what you think of my recipe. Fire away with opinions and...
Agreed, I always use yeast nutrient in a starter with a wee bit of extract thrown in for good measure. My dried yeast are already up and munching when I pitch, so they take hold in the wort right away. The only brew I have had a problem with fermentation sticking, I hadn't used nutrient or a...
I am so happy to find this thread. I have several brews under my belt and have been brewing for around six months.
First off, I have a tiny kitchen. Like a you can touch the fridge, sink, stove, prep counter, and door without moving tiny. So I really enjoy the ease, compaction, and...
Welcome to the forum, and to the hobby! I have ordered from MidwestSupplies.com with no breaks ever. Have bought 5, 3, and 1 gallon carboys from them, but I'm not sure about their shipping to Canada. There are many great and helpful threads to read here. Welcome again!
Just bottled this today. OG was 1.082, FG was 1.010, for a ABV of 9.45%. I sampled as I was bottling, and this is an awesome IPA! Nice woody notes from the Simcoe, a little bit floral from the Willys, mouth feel is a little watery which should change with carbonation, but this one is up...
EC-1118 will work up to 86 f according to its ratings on the packages, though you may end up with some off flavors or loss of bouquet, but it should work.
Just racked this to secondary and tasted. Amazing! Ended up going 1oz at onset of boil, 1oz at 20, 1oz at 40, 1oz willys at 55, and 1oz willys at flameout at 60. I also added several fl oz of honey, and a few fl oz of agave nectar to bump up the fermentables. Can't wait till this is bottled...
Started a batch a few weeks ago going off of the framework of Midwest's Simcoe Select IPA kit. In addition to the three additions of Simcoe, one on onset of boil, one at 20 min, and one at 40 min, all 1oz each, I added 1oz willys at 55 min, and 1oz willys at flameout. I also upped the...
I will have to try that for my next batch and compare tasting notes. Must is bubbling away happily this morning at about one ~blurp~ per minute. Really anxious, as mead has always been one of my favorite adult bevvies, both for flavor and its history.
Starting my first mead tonight. A straight forward, honey, water, yeast, and nutrient recipe. Going for one gallon, using 3lb of raw wildflower honey, EC-1118, and yeast nutrient. Going to be a long few months waiting on this.
Popped one open last weekend, and was still a little tart tasting(not sour, but tart) which I hear is just from being young in the bottle. Other flavors seemed on point with beginnings of tiny bubbles and carb building. I am excited to have this beer ready soon. Brewing again this week, an...
