    Boiled time way over

I've been bouncing back and forth on what should be done here. I think I have been convinced to give it a shot and add more water. It was brought to my attention that over boiling this much to a beer will also make it very heavy to drink. That really isn't a characteristic I would prefer. I was...

    Boiled time way over

Thanks. I have pretty good faith in keeping things sanitized if siphoning from the fuller one, then adding water to them both to top them off. But there is that chance of messing up. Debating if just topping off the short one is the 'safer' route to take. I plan on kegging the full one, and...

    Boiled time way over

Thanks guys. I'll try and fill in the questions from you. Ingredients listed below are for a 5 gallon. My LHBS took this information and made a 10 gallon version for me. (from http://www.whitehouse.gov/blog/2012/09/01/ale-chief-white-house-beer-recipe) 2 (3.3 lb) cans light malt extract 1 lb...

    Boiled time way over

B.L.U.F. - The wort still tasted fine So yeah, basically we ended up forgetting about the beer and it boiled for upwards of an extra hour. We are making White House Honey Ale. After the 30 minute steep, we started to take it up to boil. Once we achieved our rolling boil, we literally forgot...

uh oh, not enough yeast packets for today

I was thinking the same thing. I'm not leaving out of town until tomorrow afternoon. I should be able to grab some more prior to leaving. My basement holds about 69-70 degrees. I believe all I would need to do is shake/stir it up pretty good and pitch the yeast without worrying about anything...

uh oh, not enough yeast packets for today

If Beersmith 2 is correct, it says OG is 1.068. I believe that is pretty high though. I believe it should be around 1.059.

uh oh, not enough yeast packets for today

Well, looks like a starter won't work either. I need it done today (will be gone all next week). I still would like an answer to the previous question. But now, I would like to know if anyone has taken one pack of dry yeast and split it for two 5 gallon carboys? Would it just take longer to...

uh oh, not enough yeast packets for today

Went and bought my ingredients the other day and just now realized I have only 1 dry yeast packet. I plan on doing 1 10 gallon batch and then splitting that into two different 5 gallon carboys. With only one packet of dry yeast, can I get a way with doing a starter, then splitting that starter...

    Fruit Beer Razzy Wheat

Hope you are still around.....I know this is an old post but would love to know what you came up with. I am trying to convert this 3.5 gallon batch to either a 5 or 10 gallon. I guess it doesn't convert with simple math. Apparently there are other factors involved. Then, I will convert to an...

    saving money with brewing

Why would you even mention it? This is a hobby, right? Would you pay yourself the hours you spend on a golf course or sitting in a fishing boat? Of course not, those are hobbies too. Once this starts to "feel" like work and you need to justify any time costs, it's time to quit.

Pouring a Home Brew - Gotta be something to keep the yeast out?

Keg it and bottle from there. That's my plan!

Can a fridge hold temp high as 55•F?

I agree with this. And it surprises me that most of the pre-made controllers don't offer heat and cold (unless you take it apart and move jumpers around for heat...then reverse them for cold). I have seen youtube videos of people making their own that offers both heat/cold without it being a...

    Extract Grain Steeping

I think if you let the bottled beer sit for a bit, you will find it much better. I would like to know how to turn the aging off. lol I did an American Amber Ale that was perfect tasting at "w/e" week. But a couple of weeks later when I had one, it was too hoppy. If I could have stopped it...

Every "mistake" is a learning experience. So what will I learn from this?

OP: sound like you are going to be fine, thankfully. ;) But some of these responses brought up a couple questions from me. 1. Are you saying you don't need to actually boil the LME and DME for 60 minutes? What difference is there in the outcome? lighter/darker/less hoppier or aroma, more? Just...

Should Have Started Doing This A Long Time Ago

I believe the comparison is that he can make his own beer cheaper than he can go out and purchase beer. Not, to compare who makes it cheaper, him or Budweiser. With that said, of course you don't add a cost to the time you are spending on a hobby. That is plain ridiculous, IMO. Besides, who's...

    Kegerator compressor sizes

Seems I have some boring questions above. :( Here's another for sanke keg users. Do you find life brewing easier or more of a hassle using the sanke style kegs in your kegerator?

    bottles

Any Sam Adams and Becks Sapphire work great. With Sapphire you get the extra benefit of really, really dark bottles too. And, I like both beers. win/win
