Long term beer storage with cherries.

Does anyone here have experience with a beer stored no less than one year that has cherries in it? My assumption is the cherry flavor will diminish substantially

100's of Brews worth of yeast for only $10

I purchased the BSG Distilling yeast to see if it would dry out my beer. I paid $10 for a large bag and it is supposed to last a long time if brewing small batches. I wouldn't have typically considered this yeast due to its purpose, but I was pleasantly surprised. Come to find, the yeast is...

CA, CO, OR, TX and PA, took home 50% of the medals from the 2014 GABF

I came across an article I thought my brewing friends at HBT would be interested in reading. A post by Jeff Alworth over at Beervana yesterday got me [Geoff of Seattle Beer News] thinking. Jeff took a look at the number of medals won by each state at this year’s GABF and then wondered about...

    Is Craft Beer Underpriced

In a recent blog post (and commented on by Craft Beer and Brewing) by Nathan Miller, he suggests that craft beer is under priced. Using a basic supply/demand chart, he explains that craft beer hasn't reached the magical “equilibrium” point where supply matches demand. I'm sure that...

Brew Calendar: It's time to start thinking about Octoberfest?

I know, summer isn't here yet. But, I want to plan ahead. I haven't done one yet, but plan to stick to my new brew calendar. The questions of the day: How long should an Octoberfest Beer mature? If 6 months, it needs to be brewed this month. Otherwise, I need to move the date up. Any thoughts...

    Cold crash killed my yeast

I've been working on harvesting yeast, but it appears that when I cold crash beer to force the yeast to settle out, the yeast don't survive. I am assuming from what I have read, yeast don't like extreme temperature changes? Has anyone else had this problem. Cheers,

Say No To Mr. Beer, The Gateway Drug To Homebrewing

I have to admit, I started with Mr. Beer. My first beer was bland and under carbonated. My friends all said it sucked. My bad, not Mr. Beer's fault, or was it? I had no idea there was a big world of homebrewing supplies and equipment. It sucked me in like a black hole. I'm hooked and my wife...

Ancient Egyptian brewer's tomb found in Luxor

The man buried in the tomb was "head of beer production", archaeologists say. A Japanese team found the tomb during work on another tomb belonging to a top official under Pharaoh Amenhotep III, who died around 1354 BC. Luxor is home to a large and famous temple complex built by Amenhotep III...

    Annual Christmas Cider

The following recipe is my Annual Christmas Cider that I bottle and gift every year. It's the perfect "sit by the fire" type of drink with a warming amount of alcohol. I only make this at Christmas since the spices are for the season. This is a still cider, so there is no carbonation involved...

Turn your yeast starter into 40+ ABV sipper

I was thinking about how yeast starters are a week beer that no one would really consider drinking. And, it's a waste to throw it out. Well, I started freezing out the alcohol and saving it in a jar. I get about 4-5 oz of high strength alcohol from every gallon of beer, which adds up over time...

Bourbon style Ice Beer at 30-40% ABV

Revision: When done reading this, go to post #107 for an update. A link is posted at the bottom of this post. Iced Beer is not a new style, but it is to me. I've just dived into this idea of freezing out the water and concentrating the alcohol and beer. Why not take this and have some fun...

    Light Beers - A Rip-Off?

I certainly like a light beer on a hot day. Yes, it's mostly water, high amount of carbonation and much less alcohol. However, it's refreshing to the tongue and seems to cool you down a bit. If you brew your own beer like me, your probably making hoppy IPA's, ales and the sort. If your more...

Competition Ready Beers and Unseen Problems for Entrants

I personally enjoy submitting my beers for competition. I always go into it thinking I'll win big. However, its usually followed by disappointment due to a competition worksheet with comments about how to improve my brew. The fact is that after attending my clubs competitions and tasting the...

    Potassium Sorbate in my fermentation:

I know, what the hell? I previously used Potassium to halt any additional fermentation in my Lambic so I could add flavoring juice. Well, I was brewing today and accidentally grabbed the Potassium and add 5 grams, which is enough to halt all fermentation for 4 gallons. I wanted to add Calcium...
