    Malting Wild Rice

I'm able to get my hands on some green wild rice, thinking about malting some and using it in a beer. Any thoughts, opinions, experiences? Thanks

Reusing soft copper for CFC, bad idea?

I have about 30ft of 3/8" soft copper I'm thinking of making into a CFC but it previously had furnace oil in it. Looking for opinions on whether I can effectively clean it with boiling water soap etc... to make it clean enough for beer. Not really sure if copper has any porosity to it. Thanks

First AG BIAB Efficiency and BeerSmith Help

Yesterday I brewed my first AG batch and it had a few hiccups but overall I think it went pretty well. I had some troubles with mash temp but kept it within about 7 degrees, I'll be doing some searching of the effects of that later. I brewed a 5.5gal batch of 'hooked on bitters', previously I...

    Weighing yeast starter

I made my first yeast starter yesterday with the fist yeast I washed. Of course I was worried that the yeast wasn't viable or I'd screw up the starter etc... I'm not using a stir plate, just shaking every time I walk by so krausen doesn't have much of a chance to form to see if things are...

    Session IPA recipe advice

I'm looking to make a 'sessionable' IPA. I like the hop flavor but I'd like to brew something a little lighter then many of the 'hop bombs'. I have a pound of cascade and an ounce of centennial so I'm hoping to use mostly cascade for this recipe, here is what I have, I'd love to hear some...

    Hops and Robbers clone

What actually happens during bottle carbing?

I know the general science behind it, yeast turns sugar into CO2 building up pressure and dissolving in the beer. I'm wondering why this takes 2 weeks (leaving aside conditioning/aging)? It seems like 4oz of corn sugar should be fermented out within 24-48hrs. Now what happens? As CO2 is...

    Burner heatshield and height

I'm looking to add a heat shield and maybe raise my burner. I've only brewed with it once, seemed to do the job but a lot of heat went in every direction. The burner is 65,000BTU and about 7.25" in diameter, currently it's about 5.5" below the bottom of the pot, my pot is 13" in diameter. The...

    Blue 'drums' food safe?

I've got a small blue drum which is 30L I think, with a clamp on top and handles that I was thinking of using as a bright tank. I can't find any markings on it other then 'this side up' arrows and a manufacture date dial. I believe it originally had glucosimine for cattle in it. I may be able...

    Single canned kit FG

I had an expired muntons canned Pilsner kit laying around so I though I'd brew it into a 3 gal batch, so leave out all/most of the sugar to hopefully get a slightly heavier beer. It's been fermenting for 10 days and I took the fist gravity and it's 1.018 and the OG was 1.044. This seems a...

What to do with expired Pilsner malt extract

I have a can of Muntons pilsner malt extract kit that's expired by just over year. I did a search and I read it could lead to anything from stale tastes, to off flavours to undrinkable. So far I've only brews liquid malt extract cans with no variations or creativity. I'm looking for some...
