    Bad tasting batches

Hey folks. Not sure where to turn here, because it's going to be hard to describe my problem. My last few batches have had a very weird taste. Like I said, it's hard to describe, but the closest I can come to is a combination of rubbery and metallic (my wife says sour, but I disagree). I...

    Hops in the priming sugar

Anyone ever try it? I was listening to a BasicBrewing podcast and they talked about boiling some hops in the priming solution at bottling time for an extra kick. Sounds interesting.

    Smack pack came...pre-smacked!

I ordered a few recipe kits from NB and one of the Wyeast Smack packs was all puffed up like the nutrient pack had already been popped. My guess is I'll be fine as long as I refrigerate it and make a starter before using it. Anyone else have experience with this?

    Advanced Beginner Question. Huh?

Let's say I brew the same beer two times. The only difference is that the first batch has an OG of 1.070 and an FG of 1.018. The second batch has an OG of 1.060 and an FG of 1.008 (Let's say for the sake of argument, that the grain bill was the same, but efficiency was off). The math tells me...

Beer. Is there anything it CAN'T do?

Just saw this article about beer's natural effectiveness against viral disease. Are any of us surprised? http://www.huffingtonpost.com/mobileweb/2012/12/07/beer-has-anti-virus-properties-study-sapporo_n_2258735.html?ncid=edlinkusaolp0000000

    Christmas Carols...with a twist

Ok. It's that season. Let your inner poet come out. Let's hear HBT's version of Homebrew themed Christmas Carols. Heck, even if I'm the only one who submits entries it's worth a try. Here's the opener, sung to the tune of White Christmas. "High Krausen" I'm dreaming of a high krausen...

    Roosters Brewery in Ogden, UT

I'm going to be in Ogden Utah this week. Does anyone have an opinion of Roosters Brewery there? They also have a location in nearby Layton.

    Frozen yeast...oops!

I just washed yeast for the first time, and I was pretty impressed with how easy it was and how well I did. Well somehow the placement of one mason jar was too close to the back of the fridge and it froze. Good learning experience I guess.

    Starter Timing

I'm going to be brewing next Saturday (Dec 1, 2012) and I plan on making a large starter so I can 1) have enough yeast for an expected 1.070 OG, and 2) save a little yeast in the original White Labs vial for a future brew. The only "problem" is that I will be traveling Monday through Wednesday...

    Reduced Conditioning Time

I just racked my Belgian Tripel to a secondary Carboy to make room for a new brew in the primary. The Tripel had been in the primary for about 5 1/2 weeks and the gravity is stable at 1.019. Not as low as I'd like, but stable. I tasted the sample and it was delicious. The recipe instructions...

    Propane tank use

I know there's no precise answer, but to those of you who brew 5 gal batches (6 gals of water) how's my brews does a typical propane tank last?

    Recipe advise

My brewing partner is dead set on brewing this recipe from Brewersfriend. http://www.brewersfriend.com/homebrew/recipe/view/4136/apple-strudel-tripel Has anyone tried it? I'm skeptical because I think he's just after the high Abv. It does sound delicious though if it comes out right.

    Rescue Yeast?

I've got a Belgian Saison (WLP568) fermenting in the garage. It's been there for about two weeks. The problem is that it has been very hot in So. Cal lately and the fermentation has undergone some bad temperature swings. I know 568 does ok with higher temps but I'm worried that the variation...

    Mixing yeast strains

I was wondering if anyone here has dabbled with mixing two or more different types of yeast. Is there any reason why that should not done?

    Timing of O.G. Reading

Just had a wonderful brewday yesterday (Belgian Saison). I had just pitched the yeast and my friend asked what the OG was. That was when I realized I forgot to steal a sample for the OG reading. I thought, what the hell, and took a sample - yeast and all. The OG was 1.064, right as expected...

    Boil Volume Question

I'm about to do a 5 gal Belgian Saison with 7.5 lbs of DME. In previous extract brews I have only boiled 2.5 gallons, and then added ~3 gal cool water to the fermenter. I was wondering if I should increase the volume of water I boil. What would be the difference if I boiled 4 gal for instance...

    New Brewer in the O.C.

Greetings all. I just stated my first brew (NB Caribou Slobber) a few weeks ago. I haven't even bottled yet but I'm already hooked on home brewing. I've been reading the forums and this community is awesome.
