    Confession About Belgian Beers

B-boy, Do you like other styles of beer that are yeast-focused? For a long time, I didn't like Hefeweizens. I liked lots of different lagers, ales, pales ales, IPAs, etc. But I didn't like 'wheat beers,' as I called them at the time. I thought that wheat gave a beer some sort of funky...

    Force Carb Newbie?

First, let me congratulate you on your first batch! I can understand your confusion due to the plethora of opinions and techniques concerning carbonation. If you just racked to the keg, hooked up to CO2 at 30 psi, and chilled the keg, your beer will not be fully carbonated by now. But if...

Bottom Drain Pots and hard plumbing

I just realized that you had asked me a question. Please excuse the tardiness of my reply and the fact that my brew kettle is still dirty from brewing last night. I did all the welding on the outside of the kegs. As you can see from the picture, I am not a professional welder, and there is...

full size sanke keg false bottom worth it?

Emyers, My previous mash tun was a 10 gal beverage cooler w/ a kettle screen used as a filter. According to www.hopville.com, I was getting about 70% efficiency. I have only brewed 6 or 7 batches on my new system and I am still working on getting it dialed in. The best efficiency I have...

full size sanke keg false bottom worth it?

Emyers, the ring is there for extra support in case you brew a beer with a really big grain bill. Here's the website: http://www.norcalbrewingsolutions.com/store/False_Bottom_Stands.html . The biggest grain bill I have used so far was only 30 lbs and I think the false bottom would have worked...

Bottom Drain Pots and hard plumbing

Homebrewdude, You say you can't weld stainless...but do you have access to an arc welder? Before building my HERMS system, I read several of the soldering threads posted on here. I bought around $100 worth solder and flux. I made a tool and flared some holes in my kegs so I could weld in...

full size sanke keg false bottom worth it?

Jaybird of Norcalbrewingsolutions.com did an awesome job on mine. I bought the full false bottom w/ hinge and handle, and also the stand that goes underneath. It was a pleasure doing business with Jaybird. I talked to him on the phone so I could explain what I wanted. He happily customized...

Opps, I pitched the WRONG yeast

Homebrewdad hit the nail on the head. I don't normally buy kits, but the Belgian IPA ALL-GRAIN Kit from Midwestsupplies.com piqued my interest. I brewed it with Wyeast 3724. I had the notorious stuck fermentation that is common with this yeast, but when it was all said and done, the beer...

How many gallons of EdWort's Apfelwein have been made?

    5 I brewed. And 5 that my mother-in-law is brewing. 25,127 + 10 = 25,137.

    Non-responsive yeast

Hey Shred, I'm glad to hear that your beer is tasting good after 1 week in the bottle. Did you check your hydrometer w/ water to check its calibration? What was your gravity when you bottled - did the champagne yeast help you out?

    Non-responsive yeast

You should still be able to see signs of fermentation if you're using a blowoff tube. Do you have a good seal on the tube and have it run down into a container of sanitizer? If so, you should still see bubbles, I would think. Please keep us updated - if the champagne yeast works well for you...

    Non-responsive yeast

I had the same thing happen to me...I was brewing a Saison with Wyeast 3724. It stalled out so I tried warming it WAY up to +/- 85 degrees, which is acceptable with this yeast strain. I saw an increase in airlock bubbles for a while, but the gravity was still way too high...somewhere in the...

    You're no longer a n00b when...

#487 - The mailman and UPS guy always ask if you've been brewing lately. #488 - People no longer ask if you're "boiling seafood again."

    Aggie in Tigerland

Howdy! I am a Native Texan and a Fightin' Texas Aggie, class of 2001. Whoooop!! I moved to New Orleans in March of 2006 - six months after Hurricane Katrina - to set up FEMA housing assistance trailers. I expected to be there only a couple of months, but after 6 1/2 years, I still live...

    Propane burner igniter

I'm looking for more of an automated solution for my single tiered HERMS rig that I'm building. I took a push button, battery powered igniter out of a grill at a scrap yard. You can buy them at Lowes-Depot for $25 or $30. I have considered mounting the electrode through the heat shield around...
