Mash / Sparge Hopping and No Boil Beers of All Kinds

its funny that the word "decoction" is even mentioned in an article about how to save time! Seriously though, I think another time savings would be in clean up. I know we don't have to get our boil kettles to a sterile level of cleanliness, but personally, I do have to do some scrubbing to...

    Closed-system pressurized fermentation technique!

Thanks everyone, sorry thefost. must have had my beer goggles on. and it is cold, so frost is on my mind!

    Closed-system pressurized fermentation technique!

dang, was hoping they were the same, just depending on how you place them. Doesn't look like amazon has anything then besides this one, that is about twice the price as the recommended M-C unit, and with an apparent level of dissatisfaction...

    Closed-system pressurized fermentation technique!

would this one work from amazon? Looks to be adjustable 0-20psi (30"hg), 1/4"npt--would screw on to end of morebeer/williams premade unit? or do we think the 0-20 psi control is optimistic...

    Bittering Hops in 15 Minutes

I'm dumb--can you give us an example of how you'd use the chart (https://cdn.homebrewtalk.com/images/1/9/3/7/2/3/hbt-steve-7-1523-full.jpg) to say, get 40 IBUs into a 6 gallon batch?

    Corny Lid Thermowell Help

post back what you find. I have recently been reevaluating this option. other things to consider (or that I am considering)--you could drill a big hole, for a single or double holed stopper, one for thermowell and one for airlock (as I'm currently using with my carboys). then when it comes...

Jumpy PID PV on e-brew set up with RTD?

Ok thanks. That makes sense. That part is cheaper than a PID. And probably easier than finding my multimeter, if I even have it here. I'm not sure how those auberins thermowells work. I'd think they'd be pretty solid. I took it apart to look for issues but didn't see anything Sent from my...

Jumpy PID PV on e-brew set up with RTD?

Thanks floormatg. I don't think that's the problem. when you plug it in and set it up, you can tell it jumps around (including back and forth between 88 and -88 for example) when you are moving the cable around. I jingle the cable a bit to 'calibrate' it with a standalone digital thermometer...

Jumpy PID PV on e-brew set up with RTD?

been e-brewing now for a couple years (thanks Jkarp). for a while now (9 months?) my thermo probe to PID connection has been very jumpy. got this stuff from Auberins. It is an RTD via a QD to the good SS wrapped cable to a panel mount QD, which on the inside then goes to the PID. at...

    $50 Dedicated HERMS

ok, good data point. is your herms pot water boiling at that point (when you are ramping) or is the passing wort pulling too much energy out? what if you wanted to do a mashout, say from 154 to 168. guess you're saying that would take about an hour (not debating the value of a mashout...

    Another cool box project

the barrel side just gets cooled by what's left over? looks like a floor vent in between the rooms. other wise no temp control for the barrel side? not like a bit of a swing matters much. What controls the a/c? Nice build!

Poptarts--thanks! Genuine--cant recall if you posted this or not but have you tried/been successful at ramping? Is your copper 1/2" x 10' also?

    $50 Dedicated HERMS

Yes Poptarts, I was going to say, looks like from your most recent pic, you upgraded from the nylon T. What did you go with there? Something like this (the brass t pic halfway down) http://www.auberins.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=20_15&products_id=249? I think it's what I may...

    $50 Dedicated HERMS

SteveO--how much water are you using in your herms/hotplate pot? I think the OP was using just a couple inches. I think less water would allow more hotplate power to go into the recirculating wort. Is your MT insulated? I brew on a small (4.5 gal pre-boil) e-system and my experiences thus...

can I store my pH electrode in StarSan?

Agree! Milwaukee should license this from you for their distribution--the included info, either online or in the box, for the cheapo version (martini?) is pathetic. But, I guess this way, they sell more replacement electrodes!

Lager: Crash Cool vs. Gentle cooling

That makes sense but I think the off flavors that practitioners of the no-crash method (ramp down) worry about come from yeast, either in suspension or that have floc'd out, regardless of whether or not their work is done. That is, they could just be chillin (he he) after hitting TG and then...

Lager: Crash Cool vs. Gentle cooling

Rise! Rise back to life! As mentioned briefly here, there is some feeling that crash cooling can be hard on the yeast, even to the point of convincing them to start excreting substances that may not taste good (this is different from autolysis). For this reason, the logic goes, the crashing...

Building Dual Stage Fermentation Chamber - Need help getting power inside.

big thumbs up on that. I took inspiration from his build and use two controllers and two reptile heat tapes to control two carboys at different temps (when necessary). I throw a blanket around the warmer one, elevate it with a foam pad and can keep a 35*F temp difference on 4 gallons. So...
