    Yellow stuff in krausen

The fermentation is still going. I'm still getting bubbles in my airlock even now. (The recipe called for first dry-hop just before complete fermentation.) I'll see how this turns out, but good idea for the next batch if this one doesn't work out. This is my first really hoppy beer. So I'm...

    Yellow stuff in krausen

That's ideal. But, given I need to, at the very least, transfer to an open bottling bucket, add sugar, and fill bottles, that's not exactly realistic. I imagine that's pretty common for beginners, too. Minimal exposure is as good as I can do.

    Yellow stuff in krausen

Considering it's October, it didn't even register that there might be an April 1st article on the front page. o_O

    Yellow stuff in krausen

Also... maybe we should tell the BrewBro guys that oxygen exposure should probably stop at some point, lol... https://www.homebrewtalk.com/brewing-system-brew-single-pint-homebrew.html EDIT: Ooooooookay, just noticed that's an April Fool's joke... *facepalm* It seemed really odd. I've...

    Yellow stuff in krausen

Well, without a way to purge the oxygen (say, with CO2), it is what it is. Either way, the beer will be exposed to some oxygen. Is this worse than letting it sit for a long time on the yeast cake? I've heard that can produce off flavors, too. Either way, I'm sure it'll perfectly drinkable...

All done, and ready to stick back in the temp-controlled freezer.

    Yellow stuff in krausen

Thanks, I figured it was probably hop material, but can't hurt to ask. I try to be careful during racking to secondary. No splashing and as little aeration as possible. I wanted to rack into the dry hops, as well as get off the yeast cake/trub to avoid off flavors. The recipe calls for dry...

    Yellow stuff in krausen

I'm about to reach to a secondary for dry-hopping, and I noticed some yellow stuff in the krausen. It looks mineraly or crystalline, and I don't believe it's mold or an infection. But I'm curious if anyone knows what this is. Also, I've never had a beer with a yeast cake on top and bottom...

Brewing an Irish Coffee Milk Stout

Finally got off my butt and bottled this beer yesterday. Tried a sip, and it's really promising. I think it's going to be really delicious! Now, I just have to be patient until it's carbonated... *sigh*

Brewing an Irish Coffee Milk Stout

Just racked into secondary with some cold-brewed coffee and a pair of vanilla beans. A tiny sip of the leftovers was really tasty. Details on the cold-brew: I used 4oz of Peet's Big Bang medium roast whole-bean coffee with about 14oz of water, refrigerated for about 3 days. I poured in what I...

Brewing an Irish Coffee Milk Stout

I could see a little vanilla enhancing the lactose a bit. Might give it a try. Thanks!

Brewing an Irish Coffee Milk Stout

It's been forever since I last brewed a beer... way too long! I had a kit sitting around, so I decided to go ahead and brew it up. It's an extract/specialty grains kit for an Irish stout. But, I wanted to tweak it a bit to really make it interesting. Kit ingredients: 2 containers Briess...

    Fruit Beer Lemon-Lime Hefe Weizen

I thought it may be pasteurized, so it keeps the risk of infection down. But I'm not seeing anything about that on the label. I'd say make sure you wash your hands and limes before making limeade, then go for it. Just remember sanitation and you'll be fine.

    Fruit Beer Lemon-Lime Hefe Weizen

Give it time, it will probably start showing fermentation soon. Your one batch was pretty low, so you may be under on sugars extracted from that part. But I'd imagine that is more likely your gravity reading was off than anything else, since og should have been close to 1.050 or 1.060. Mine...

    Fruit Beer Lemon-Lime Hefe Weizen

Just brewed this one myself. Can't wait to drink it again. It's been a while.

    First all-grain brew! Lemon-Lime Hefeweizen

I just brewed this again yesterday. I can't wait to finally have this beer again! I might have to brew a second batch soon just to keep myself stocked up. I'm tempted to carbonate similarly again, though I still worry about bottle bombs. Maybe I'll keep it to the "safe" maximum of 3 volumes...

    Simple stir plate build

First, for background, I've tried building a stir plate before. I used a simple circuit to control a DC computer fan. That seemed to work fine, but I could never get the stir bar to stir properly. I had used one of the curved hard drive magnets, and it was a pain to really get that thing...

    NB Oktoberfest

Thanks for recommending a double crush. I'll have to try that next time I pick up some grain. Either that, or get my own mill.

What got you into the hobby?

My story isn't terribly exciting, but hey... you asked! Until my late 20's, I hated beer. I thought it was awful. I never liked the smell of commercial beers. And I had my first real beer when I was about 20. That beer had been a Guinness, and let me tell you that's not necessarily the...
