    Brew monk system

If you get one, I do have an equipment profile for brewfather if you use that, not hard to set one up but it does take a few brews to figure it all out. Can always send the profile your way, if you use brewfather.

    Brew monk system

I have had this system week over a year now and for the most part, it's been fantastic. Efficiency can sometimes be a little over the place, but generally I get about 72% BHE, I have had as low as 56% once but that did have a lot of wheat in it. Fwiw I do full volume no sparge, and undoubtedly...

    Pre boiled my brewing water

So a while back I decided to see how much boiling my water reduced my Alkalinity by and was amazed by the results. I have been using AMS/CRS and lactic to reduce my Alkalinity, but I had noticed that when brewing and cream ale for instance I have had what I can only describe as odd mouth feel...

Same pre boil reading every time.

Not sure yet as the beer isn't finished, took a sample last night and seems to be down to 1.012 and tasted really good. My grain are always pre crushed so maybe I will start there. P.H was 5.4 and the mash temp stayed at 66°c throughout the mash. As for laurtering, I have no idea if it is...

Same pre boil reading every time.

I will try this the sugar solution trick too see if this helps to explain if my hydro is off. This is exactly what I was trying to say ( just not clear enough lol ) that my hydro could be off with more sugar in solution

Same pre boil reading every time.

Nope, it's a normal 100ml trial jar and the hydro is floating

Same pre boil reading every time.

I don't use the same amount of grain in each brew. For this previous batch I used. 4.5kg Maris Otter .5kg Malted oats .5kg Choc Malt .3kg Roasted Barley .25kg Crystal 23 liter batch mashed with 20 litres of water and Sparged with 15.1 litres of water. Mash P.H was 5.44. All volumes were pretty...

Same pre boil reading every time.

No I'm not correcting it, I am waiting for the sample to cool. Sometimes the reading might be within 2 points of 1.044 but it nearly always hovers around that point. I must be doing something wrong but I just can't figure out what lol

Same pre boil reading every time.

What I'm asking is if anybody has had this issue? My post boiler reading is 1.048, so apparently I have only gained 4 points for a 4.5ltr boil off? Would moisture in the hydro mean there could be a crack and would that effect my readings? As said previously, checked it in distilled water @20°c...

Same pre boil reading every time.

So, to cut a long story short, my last several batches have all read the same pre boil gravity no matter what the grain bill. I have mostly been doing no sparge on an all in one system and after hearing from the guys on Jim's beer Kit ( forum over here in the UK ) everybody says I must be...

    Weird Alkalinity numbers

Buying RO over here in UK is not easy, when it is available in places like aquarium centres it is expensive, maybe I will buy an RO system and build the water myself.

    Weird Alkalinity numbers

OK, so a while back I posted a tread on here about using Carbonate Reducing Solution to help deal with my high Alkalinity, which was around the 189 mark as Hc03. Don't know if this is possible, but last week when checking my Alkalinity again, I ended with 70ppm as HC03 before even adding...

Thanks mate, really is amazing what a phone can do these days

    Question about Carbonate reducing solution

Also decided to do this as no sparge, bit of an odd day really. Everything has gone well, higher pre boil gravity than I anticipated based on 72%, no idea what my starting gravity is as just broke my hydrometer before I could get one. Pre boil was 1.044 at 27ltrs and expected was 1.040, 21ltrs...

    Question about Carbonate reducing solution

I will try what you have suggested. as I side note, after draining some of my treated water and replacing with tap, I brewed today ( just finished ) and my mash pH after 10 mins was 5.3 so I must have screwed up somewhere when testing the water.

    Question about Carbonate reducing solution

So, that calculator really over estimates the amount of CRS needed, I put my Alkalinity into the calculator as measure with Salifert, which said I need 20.7ml. Took a pH sample of just the water with CRS and it measures 4.5ph. Then rechecked the alkalinity with the Salifert kit, that read as no...

    Question about Carbonate reducing solution

My CRS/AMS say contains Sulphuric acid. I used it in the past and it really does works well at reducing the Alkalinity as tested by the Salifert KH kit.

    Question about Carbonate reducing solution

I believe it is a blend of acids. According to Brupaks website they recommend using another blend of stuff call DLS after CRS to increase calcium.

    Question about Carbonate reducing solution

Also, does Lactic reduce Alkalinity as effectively as something like CRS? Obviously it all depends on different water sources, but for one like mine, I imagine I would have to use a lot of lactic to reduce it sufficiently when using mostly pale malt and light adjuncts. Like I say, I used it...
