    Question about taking Final Gravity

So, I forgot to take my final gravity. In hopes to save myself, I used the foam that was left over from aerating the wort. I just let the foam turn into liquid and then measured it. My question is, will this give me an accurate FG result?

    carbonating and conditioning in kegs

Hello friends From what I think I have learned, when I bottle, it is best to let the bottles sit for a minimum of a few weeks to carb, condition, and improve flavor. I think that I have also learned that you can force carb in kegs and drink within 1-3 days. Does the beer not condition when...

    possible carbonation problems in keg.

Hello friends. I kegged my first beer 2 days ago naturally. I thought by now that there would be some pressure built up in the keg. I wanted to know, so I tested it....and....no pressure. I thought maybe a leak in the seal. I added a shot of CO2 and I heard a quick (about 2 second) hiss from...

    first time kegging question.

Hello friends. When naturally carbing, does the carbonation create enough pressure to push even an ounce to 2 out?

    sparging BIAB

I was wondering why it is needed to sparge a BIAB at the temp of 170 or above. What is the purpose of the sparge? I think I read somewhere that sparge was for 2 reasons.. 1) to eliminate stuck mash. - BIAB shouldn't get stuck. 2) something about halting conversion. - well, if you already...

could this recipe please be critiqued.

I was trying to come up with something for spring. Not sure what I made. This beer is already in the fermenter. Just kind of want to see what style you guys might call it, and if I did anything wrong. Recipe: 4.5 lbs. 2-row 1.5 lbs wheat 4 oz Crystal 150 3 oz Carapils 60 min. 0.45 oz...

    gravity readings

I ferment on the 3rd floor so sometimes I take gravity readings and the sample sits there for a couple of days. Here are my questions: After about 24-48 hours, the gravity loses about 4 points. (goes from say 1.018-1.014) What is the reason for this? Which reading is more accurate?

    Does whirlfloc affect spices?

It sounds like it doesn't, but does whirlfloc affect the use of spices like nutmeg, cinnamon, allspice, and the like? cheers.

    mixing corn sugar

So, from what I have read, it is nearly impossible to get a good OG when topping your wort off with water at the beginning of the whole brewing process due to the difficulty of mixing wort with water. If that is so, how do I know that my corn sugar is mixed well after racking into the bottling...

    storing leftover sugar and such.

How do you guys store extra powder type supplies. Lactose, corn sugar, DME, and similar. I buy more than I need so that I can have it on hand next time.

    solubles and specific gravity

I was thinking. Do any other solubles (grain particles, proteins, hop particles, etc.) affect the specific gravity in addition to the sugars? If so, once they drop out of suspension, could that give an inaccurate FG compared to the initial OG where these particles were in suspension?

splashing the wort in the fermenter

hey all, i read that it is not good to splash the wort around in the fermenter (accidentally or purposely) because it will oxygenate the beer and give it off flavors. if the beer has been in the fermenter for, lets say, 3 days and there has been a very active airlock proving a lot of...

    adjusting for sparge?

hey brewers, i recently found a recipe which i would like to recreate. however, in this recipe, the author states that it is for a no-sparge method and that i should adjust if i am going to be sparging. how would you recommend that i do this?

    stout turned out too chocolatey.

Hey everyone. I did a chocolate stout yesterday. I used 6oz of cocoa. When got the OG I tasted the wort. Wow! Tasted like cold hot-chocolate. Will this chocolate flavor fade over the next couple of weeks?

what is the effect of FG on the final product?

I'm still new to this, so bear with me. I can't seem to find the answer to this. I don't mean a high FG that was supposed to be low, i mean an expected high FG. Not in relation to OG or alcohol content. in other words, what can be noted different in the beer (flavor, texture, head...

    didn't get good carbonation

hello. I'm very new at this... i bottled my first brew, and after 7 days a cracked open a bottle to test it. it surprisingly tasted descent, however, there was only minimal carbonation. I used the recommended amount of cane sugar and bottled it about 2" from the top of the bottle. also...
