    planning a homestead, suggestions?

Still working on it. Making plans. Keeping an eye out for the right property. We don't plan to be full on self sufficient. We'd be happy if we could subsidize half our food bill over the year. Thanks for all the pointers from you guys! It's really kicked off a lot of research and learning. We...

    buying a grill / smoker

Without having used it myself, it seems like it should work fine. Keep in mind, cheaper charcoal smokers use a Crap ton of charcoal. You can seal up air leaks, but your probably going to spend another $100 to get that thing to any state of efficiency using coal. If you're OK with upgrading, or...

Alberta changes laws and let's almost anyone sell beer!

Before a couple weeks ago, you had to have a minimum volume capacity of 24000 liters per year to sell beer, they removed that, and now the only requirements are a business license and a food safe area to get a liquor license! I can start selling my brew! Now to find the time to brew for myself...

New mash tun manifold: where to solder?

My manifold is similar, and I don't have any solder. Just dry fit. Your not really worried about having it watertight inside the mash, your just filtering. It's super easy to take apart and clean. Just be careful if you dump the grain out. Parts tend to get lost...

Funny things you've overheard about beer

It's a tongue in cheek joke from a Canadian comedy show. I guess you have to be Canadian to get it.

Awesome, thanks for getting this thread back on topic with the sandwich recipe.

I clicked on this thread thinking there was a new type of cross bred hop, and now I can't stop thinking about how hungry I am for a good sandwich and trying to get a visual of ear sodomy out of my head... My tummy says yes, and my imagination wishes it could turn back time.

    What does the Fox say?

The two guys that did it are the hosts of a talk show and did it as a joke for their show. Pretty good production value for a joke!

Smack Pack - have I been misled?

I would be more concerned with off flavours pitching two types of yeast. That can work well, but sometimes ends up with an undesirable finish. Again, I wouldn't be too worried unless you have every other variable covered. Do you have awesome temp control? Perfect mash temp control? A great malt...

Smack Pack - have I been misled?

I would just pitch the smack pack. I used just one for all my 5g brews for a long time and my beer turned out fine. Pitching the proper amount of yeast does affect the flavour, but so do 100 other variables. Having one or two variables off (within reason) won't ruin a beer. Under pitching will...

    planning a homestead, suggestions?

Thanks for all the tips. I looked up garden forests, and I think that's a great idea! Combined with a small row garden, you'd have a ton of produce with very little work!

    planning a homestead, suggestions?

Earth man cave, awesome! Didn't think of that! Or even a cheap root celar to store garden preserves... I'll have to look into it more!
