SSBrewTech Announced a New Insulated Mash Tun!

Looks nice! Can any new owners comment on how easy it is to clean? At 35 lbs it seems like it would be a little cumbersome to pick up, move around, dump out, etc., compared to a 10 gallon plastic cooler. It would be nice to be able to CIP after scooping out most of the grain. Is the bottom drain...

Anyone using Better Bottle "Dry trap" airlocks for long-term aging?

Good to hear. I'm going to give them a shot. Found these oxygen transfer tests on the Better Bottle website. While the source is obviously biased, I'm impressed that they actually took the time to perform these kinds of tests, and were able to measure oxygen transfer so precisely. According...

Anyone using Better Bottle "Dry trap" airlocks for long-term aging?

Label Peelers has them on sale right now - $17.40 for the PET closure and $13.46 for the Dry Trap. So about $31 plus shipping. Definitely the cheapest that I've seen them. http://labelpeelers.com/universal-pet-closure-for-better-bottle-bb-clz-pet-04/...

Anyone using Better Bottle "Dry trap" airlocks for long-term aging?

For lambics and other sour beers that should sit undisturbed in the fermenter for a year or longer, it would be great if I could stick the carboy in a dark inaccessible corner of my storage room, set a calendar reminder for sometime in the distant future, and then literally just forget about it...

SSBrewTech Announced a New Insulated Mash Tun!

Yeah that stood out to me as well. I typically lose no more than 1-2 degrees over a 60 minute mash, however that's with preheating the cooler and covering the top with a blanket. For big mashes I lose less than 1 degree. Depending on how they did the heat loss experiment though, that much...

SSBrewTech Announced a New Insulated Mash Tun!

In case this is helpful to anyone... I asked SS Brewtech a few questions about their mash tun, and pasted their reply below. Personally I'm on the fence; it's a unique product with features that are important to me (stainless, insulation, bottom drain, volume markings), but for the price I'd...

Perlick flow control -> growler filler -> beer gun?

So I have a beer gun that I almost never use because it's I find it to be a big hassle to set up unless I'm doing 12 or more bottles. Most of the time all I want to do is fill up one or two bottles to give away. I'm in the process of upgrading my kegerator to one with all flow-control...

Before I used my pump, I wish someone would have told me...

I like using a foot switch to control my pump. It's great for, say, adding water to the mash while also stirring and monitoring temperature. The other thing I'd say is to plan out your sequence of turning valves on/off and connecting/disconnecting hoses. For example... you have your pump...

Chicago - WTT my 6 gal carboys for 6 gal Better Bottles

I recently moved into a new house where my brew space is on the roof, and fermentation space is in the basement. Carrying full glass carboys down 3 flights of stairs is an accident waiting to happen, not to mention hard on my back. So I'm switching from glass to PET carboys. I have two...
