You know you're a home brewer when?

Someone introduces themselves as "Brett," you nod and reply, "Funky."

    Beginner Brew

This episode of Tudor Monastery Farm includes some of the process of making historic ale, including malting and collecting wild yeast. I'm sure it can be done, but I don't think the end product will be much like what you think of as beer.

Extract brews often do not go below FG of 1.020

I think the biggest issue with extract recipes is the variability of what additives are already present in the extract. I generally use gold LME that is made from 2-row and a bit of carapils or carafoam to increase body and head retention. Other extracts may have malto-dextrine added instead...

Single 12oz pouch or box for checked luggage?

Wow... that is expensive bubble wrap! It may be easier to just buy a big roll of bubble wrap from a moving or storage place. You can just wrap the bottles and tie a ribbon on each side. Or, a slightly less labour-intensive option would be to buy padded envelopes that are big enough to put a...

    Bottling without a tree

Around these parts a bottle tree costs $30+, and at the time we had no brick and mortar LHBS so I'd have to pay for shipping on top of that. The Ikea hack cost under $20 because I already had several Rubbermaid containers on hand and an Ikea store down the street. So it was marginally about...

    Bottling without a tree

I use a rubbermaid bin with two of these plastic dish racks from Ikea. I like that they're easy to sanitize before I start putting bottles on them.

    Recommended Further Reading

Not a book, but I found BobbyFromNJ's all-grain video series to be really good for helping me understand some of the science content of beer. I can't recommend it enough... https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLD29FE33E17F07F8D

So, where are all the women?

As a female sound engineer who mixes FOH and monitors (albeit in broadcast television, not on the road), I can absolutely imagine the comments you would get. In my 14 years in the biz, I've only ever had the pleasure of working with two female touring sound engineers. You are a rare breed...

So, where are all the women?

LOL! Heart's in the right place, even if the logic is flawed. (eg. So men lack patience because hobbies like knitting and quilting are female dominated?) Historically, brewing was a domestic job and was generally taken care of by the woman of the household. But modern homebrewing has only...

What's your biggest non brewing hobby?

I also have way too many hobbies to be able to manage properly... longboarding (skateboarding), cycling, sailing, weight lifting, nordic skiing, kayaking, sewing, quilting, jewelry making, gardening, canning/preserving, board games and photography are the first ones to come to mind. ;)

So, where are all the women?

Men definitely outnumber women in this hobby, but I feel like that's beginning to change. I think I counted 3 women (including myself) at my last homebrewers meeting...

What's your occupation: Engineer or Non-Engineer

Sound engineer... so, yeah. Non-engineer. :fro:

    Any greater toronto area homebrewers?

There's the SOBs (Southern Ontario Brewers) who are an online club that don't really have regular meetings, but they do arrange some excellent bulk buys. Sign up for an account at areyouansob.com There are some groups that meet monthly, like the Durham Homebrewers Club (DHC) and others that...

What else can I make from a Dead Ringer IPA kit. Not an IPA fan

What styles do you enjoy? Since Gold extract is pretty much the extract equivalent to a base malt (it's made from 2-row and a bit of carapils, iirc), you can use the syrup to make any number of different styles with it. Name some styles you like, and I'm sure we can come up with recipe...
