Do bottles with these closures have be stored on their sides or can they be stored standing?
 
Sideways, right-side up, uipside down... well, maybe not upside down. :) And after opening you can use it as a stopper/tasting cork.
 
I have done some research on these and they seem to be pretty good. I am going to give these things a whirl. My only concern is that they may not be good for long term storage. Doesn't usually last that long anyway.
 
Well, they claim they're for keeping wine 4-5 years. I don't know whether or not that fits your definition of "long time." Heck, some corks aren't good for that long! :D
