Four Grain Questions

1. What does the malting process do to the grain?

2. A lot of grains are called "2-row ___" What does 2-row mean?

4. I have also run into IPA recipes that call for "Pilsner malt" at 67% or so. Why is a pilsner malt used for ales?

A lot of us could spit out bits and pieces of what your asking. Some could answer it word for word out of the book. Do your self a favor and get the complete The Complete Joy of Homebrewing Third Edition and read it at least twice.

2. 2 vs 6 row refers to the grains on the stalk of the barley plant. It literally means the grains are two per row on the plant. They are made different by nature, not by us.

3. Anything with a type 2 will be darker. Munich II is a little darker than Munich I.

4. Used for very light color and graininess. It's just what they wanted to drink that day.
