Hey,

I recently bought a bag of whole barley and planted it in the hope that I can make some specialty malts, only thing is I don't know if it's spring or winter barley.

Does anyone know if there are any visible characteristics between the 2 grains which will help me identify them

Thanks in advance..

Too late now! Fingers crossed.

It's feed barley presumably, so high Nitrogen - don't expect great malt yields.

Thanks guys, it's only an experiment at this stage so I bought a 500g bag from the LHBS, so I don't suppose it's feed barley.

One thing I have noticed is that it's growing incredibly slow! I steeped and rested the grains for 3-4 days until I saw chits then planted. It does have a best before date of May this year though so it must have been harvested some time ago. Would this make a difference??
