Question on Growing Hops

I know hops grow up a support. I have 10' poles in my pots for them to grow vertically. I live in an apartment on the second floor where space is a concern. I have my hop plants in planters on the balcony in the sun for most of the day. Once/if the bines outgrow the supports can I let the bines hang over the side of the balcony? They will still get sun. Has this ever been done. I liken it to growing tomatoes upside down but the roots will be planted normally.

You can let them hang but they will search for something to wind around.
