Are they needed in BIAB?

Nope.

They are to prevent a stuck sparge and thatis not an issue with BIAB.

Actually the can still help if you have a high % of oats or something like pumpkin. Did a pumpkin beer when I first started BIAB and it took forever to drain even with squeezing. Added .5 lbs rice hulls for it since then and it drains much better. Also use them in my oatmeal stout
