You don't really want to mark the inside of the bucket in a way that bacteria can harbor in scratches, markings, etc. I suggest just using sharpie markings on the outside of the bucket, if it is anything like mine you can see the liquid level enough through the plastic to see where it is. My sharpie markings have held up really well.

There's a new sharpie that is extra heavy duty. I've got a couple of them and they're very good:

You might also, if you want to etch markings on the plastic, do it on the outside not the inside. Then it won't matter about the scratches harboring bacteria.

A normal sharpie won't wash off the outside of a plastic carboy. I have graduated carboys where the sharpie marks are years old.

Bobbym at brew hardware sells stickers to mark the levels if I remember correctly.

Sharpie on my Better Bottles has lasted over 5 years, I am using BobbyM's vinyl stickers now because it is easier to see and looks nicer. I used the white ones.

I have 3 bottles done about 4 to go.

thanks all. These are just your normal Better Bottle 5 gal carboys so will for sure be on the outside. My 1gallon glass ones I etched came out real nice. I had to leave it on a longer than the directions say to get it as 'frosty' as I wanted. Just to test them I did a Brewer's Best 1 gallon American Red Ale after I got done. :mug:
