First AG and barleywine complete wahooo

I finished my first AG batch today and it was my first barleywine also, Jumped in the deep end right off the bat. I had a blast today , it did take a lot longer than expected. Boiled 10 gallons down to 5.5g. My target OG was 1.116 and I hit 1.114 So im very happy. (should I be?) I do have a question. My LHBS and recipe/info sheet said I was to make a 3g 2nd batch with the runnings of a 1.046 beer. I didnt do that. I boiled it ALL down to the 5.5g (3 hour boil down just to get to 6g for hop addition start) . I was expecting like a 1.130 or higher with all the boil down. What went wrong if anything? Is there limits to how much gravity you can get out of a grain bill by concentrating it? Does it get so caramelized that it effects the OG?
