Help with gutted fridge wiring.

I got a free fridge that I wanted to use as fermentation chamber. It worked perfectly fine before I gutted it. I tried to put the wires together, white w/ white and black w/ black. Now, every time I plug it in, my entire breaker for the garage resets. I'm no electrician, but I thought this was going to be an easy connection. Here's a pic.
