I live in a small town that supplies its own water from the St Clair River(Great Lakes), and found their annual report, which only lists the bad things in the water. So I email their superviser, asking if I can get the levels of the various minerals, and I get this:

Rich,

Here is the following results.

Sodium 7.2 ppm
Fluoride range is .67 ppm
Hardness 100 ppm
Sodium Hypochlorite (disinfection) typically between 1.0 and 1.1 ppm
PH stays 8.

Hope this help.

Can I tell anything about my water? Or should I have it tested on my own?

A water utility is required to measure very few of the things we brewers are concerned with. Its not a surprise that there was little information provided. Sending off a sample would be wise. Read more about what you need to know about your water on the Water Knowledge page of the Bru'n Water site.
