So my first attempt at harvesting my Wyeast 1214 yeast yielded this 3 layer cake from my homebrew.

The bottom most layer I make out to be hops/trub.

What confuses me is the next two. I assumed the middle layer was the yeast but then there's this milky 3rd layer up top. I plan on shaking up and transferring into new, clean, water after about 20 mins or so, but what am I trying to keep? The middle 2nd layer or the 3rd up top?

The 3rd up sop looks nothing like the vial of white labs California ale yeast i have in my fridge. Did I grow something nasty on top of my yeast?

After this I think I'm just going to harvest off of my starters.

Bottom = trub and hops
Middle = trub and yeast
Top = yeast

If you are going to transfer again, keep the middle and top.
