Its not necessary but cold crashing will help produce a more clear beer. Assuming fermentation is 100% done you certainly can do that. Many people prefer to leave their beer on the yeast for another week after it is done fermenting in order to allow the yeast to "clean up" the beer, but that is a personal choice. Congrats on your first proper batch! Curious to know what an "improper batch" is?
 
I like the clearer results you get from whirlfloc+cold crashing.

I normally crash for 3-5 days. I'm not sure how much good overnight would do.

 
Thanks guys. I intended to bottle this weekend, but it clearly hasn't fermented. It will probably be finished in a couple of weeks. I'll go by the FG then cold crash thanks again. Your help is very much appreciated.
