I've been using a 25' 3/8 copper chiller to cool down my 5 gallon batches. I've been recirculating ice water in a cooler through the chiller by means of a submersible harbor freight pump while the wort is whirlpooled via a chugger pump. On my last batch my HF pump crapped out (shocker I know).

Here's what I was thinking of doing...thoughts?

Buy a 50' stainless steel 1/2" wort chiller and use it like a HERMS coil. Specifically, drop it in my HLT or Mash Tun full of ice water and pump the hot wort through the chiller on the way back to the whirlpool port on the kettle. This way I wouldn't need to purchase another submersible pump. I would occasionally drain water from the HLT or MLT and add ice as it melts off.

Sounds like a good dual-use reason to go HERMS to me.
Keeping the chiller out of the BK definitely helps with the whirlpool too.
