Best base malt for a CC

What in your experience is the best base malt for a California Common?
.... assuming the usual crystal malt, northern brewers hops & SF Lager yeast ...

I like Pale Ale but I have seen recipes with Vienna as a base.

2-row Pale with about 25% Light Munich.
