Hi guys,

If you look at this picture my beersmith says that Im supposed to do a mash with 5.87L of water to then do a fly sparge with 8.80L of water. It says therefore that the pre-boil volume should be 12.42L but 5.87L+8.80L=14.67L! I dont understand!

Thank you

Seb

Grain absorption? Beer Smith probably calculates it.

Difference between total water in mash (infusion + sparge) is grain absorption as stated above and any dead space in your mash tun. If you go the 'vols' tab, it will walk down through the water gained/lost at each step.

BTW if you are using a template mash profile or equipment profile which came with the software, they are meant to be customized to your specific process and how you want to conduct the mash. Making your own profiles may give you a better understanding of how everything is calculated.
