Found a recipe of a Sierra Nevada Clone online that looked good and ordered all the ingredients.
However, when I added the recipe in BeerSmith I get a lot of the numbers wrong.

Original Recipe

1 lb Crystal Malt 60L
6 lb Breiss Light Dry DME

60 min .33 oz Magnum 14,4%
30 min .6 oz Perle 6.9%
10 min 1 oz Cascade 5.6%
0 min 2 oz Cascade 5.6%

Safale US-05

OG: 1.053
FG: 1.012
IBUs: 37
ABV: 5.9%

3 gal water in kettle, top up with water to 5.5 gal in fermenter.

Can't see what I'm doing wrong here really? Should I follow the original recipe and still get a good beer or is there any reason to add more hops for IBUs?

Many thanks! :mug:

Well, for one thing, the alpha acid %'s are different for both recipes. Also, the original recipe is probably for 5 gallons and Beersmith is set at 5.5. Honestly, the difference between the two doesn't amount to much. If you want, bump up the bittering hops a little bit. Other than that I wouldn't worry about it.

Thanks BBL_Brewer,

Yes, I noticed that the alpha %'s that I ordered was slightly different from the recipe.
However, the original recipe actually says to top up to the 5.5 gal mark so that's why I put that number in to BeerSmith.

If I bump the Magnum hop to .9 oz instead of .33 I get a IBUs reading of 37.2 which is almost spot on. Would that be a good solution or should I and a little less and also put some more of the Perle hops in?

^^Agreed. Make sure you have the correct alpha acid values entered into BeerSmith if you want a clearer estimate of IBU's. I would also adjust the bittering hops. I did an SNPA clone a couple months ago with the following hop schedule:

1.0 oz Perle for 60 min (6.5%)
1.0 oz Cascade for 15 min (6.2%)
0.5 oz Cascade at flameout.
35.1 IBU's

I think your hop schedule looks tasty but if I were to play around with it a little, I think that 2 oz of cascade at flameout is a lot for this beer. Maybe take an ounce of that and add it earlier. That will add some IBU'S. Or, you could bump up that magnum add a tad to a half an ounce. Who knows right? Don't get me wrong, what you already have looks good too. It's about personal preference. IF I were to play with it, that is what I would do.

Edit: You posted while I was typing my reply. Meet in the middle. Bump the magnum and Perle adds up a little bit.

Thanks alot guys! As this is my first ever brew I'm a bit worried about getting it all right.

I changed the hop schedule to this:
0.5 oz Magnum for 60 min (13.8%)
0.8 oz Perle for 30 min (9%)
1.0 oz Cascade for 15 min (6.9%)
1.0 oz Cascade for 5 min
1.0 oz Cascade at flameout

33.7 IBUs

Good luck! I think you'll like how your new hop schedule turns out. :rockin:

That seams like a lot of crystal 60.

You might consider using:
1/2 lb crystal 60 and
1/2 lb carapils

These are pretty common specialty grains for a pale ale.
