Grounding question

My question appears to have been asked a few times, but quite honestly, I'm unsure of the right answer. I'm finishing up my 50A build (4-wires coming into the control panel) and my element receptacles are of the 3-prong non-grounding type.

I attached my elements to 3-prong dryer cords, and used the middle wire (the neutral) as a ground to my kettle.

Am I fine with attaching a ground wire in the control panel to the "neutral" screw of the receptacle inside the control box? It seems that all three wires are separate in the cord and respective plugs, so it appears that it will work, but wanted to be sure.

Also, I apologize if this has been answered again and again, but I'm pulling my "idiot card" today.

3-wire 220 is line-line-ground, not line-line-neutral

So yes, you should attach that wire to ground in your panel.
