When building a keezer using a chest freezer, is the wooden collar needed because of the height of the corny kegs or just to accommodate the taps?

My understanding is that it depends on the freezer. Some are deep enough to fit kegs and some aren't. Most collars are for the taps though.

I haven't seen any faucets/shanks running through the sides or front of a chest freezer. They're either through the lid or collar.

I used a collar because it looks nice, it's easy to mount gas components, and it holds faucets easily.

If you build it high enough I have seen some that are able to fit the kegs on the shelf(if you have one with it).
