    Simple starter overflow question

Made a 2L starter for Edinburgh Ale Yeast for a Strong Scottish Ale and it worked (really) well. Just curious since I have never had a starter go so strongly, is the tan goo from the overflow yeast or some kind of waste? This one spilled over three time like this.

Irish Red Ale Raging Red Irish Red Ale

Couple iPhone photos, not the best quality. This was in Primary for 24 days, cold crashed for 4 days, and kegged about 2 months ago. Looks great but batch is off a bit, was my first batch with a grain mill and I overshot OG by 10 points, which caused yeast to under attenuate since I didn't have...

    Hello from charleston, SC!

Welcome from NC. I followed the same path. Did a couple extracts, then a couple partial mash brews, then SWMBO booted me out of the kitchen and I upgraded to all grain. I enjoyed the path and not counting my first beer, which was brutally bad, I've made decent beers with each method. Enjoy.

    Hello from Charlotte, NC

Welcome from Concord. I've had good success leaving beers in primary for 24 to 28 days, then I put them in a spare fridge for three days at 38deg before bottling/kegging. After kegging the beer is always better after a week in the keggerator. Gives things time to settle out. Enjoy, and check...

    Hello from Portugal

Hello and welcome. My wife's family is from Madeira, we visited last year for 2 weeks and stayed a couple days is Lisbon. Wonderful place, lots of people had home made wine and agua ardiente (maybe spelled wrong, it was sugar cane alcohol). I had Poncha and Shandy for the first time too. I...

    First Broken Hydrometer

I had a tube with caps on both end for my first hydrometer. I took them both out to clean after my maiden batch, and very carefully slid the hydrometer back in, let it go, and watched seemingly in slow motion as it slid out the other end and smashed on the counter. Pretty bad when the little...

If you want some straight forward descriptions of ingredients, try these links. Malt characteristics: http://www.beercolor.com/malt_descriptions.htm Hop chart (among others on this site): http://byo.com/resources/hops I recommend picking something basic. It might sound boring, but I'm a...

Steps to coming up with new recipes

Might check out Brewing Classic Styles for some guidelines. A resource I like to use is Brewmasters Warehouse. First pick a style like American Pale or Amber, then spend some time browsing all their on-line recipes. Many recipes posted there are from members of this forum. You'll start to...

American Pale Ale Da Yooper's House Pale Ale

I brewed this and kegged it after 24 days in primary. Skipped dry hopping and let the keg sit in a closet under 5lbs of pressure for a month while I snuck a wheat beer onto the tap for a relative. Tried last weekend and it is definitely an excellent brew. Very clean, nice cascade smells...
