    Worst. IPA. Ever.

My wife bought a sixer of this for me, knowing I'm an IPA guy. After about 2 sips off the first bottle, I dumped it. Tried another one when I hadn't been having my palate wrecked by some other high IBU brews. Poured that out too. Just plain nasty.

How long can a yeast cake stay alive...

Planning on doing just that this weekend. Have a yeast cake that's been in the sealed fermenter under a couple inches of beer for almost 2 weeks now. I also planning on doing a pretty big beer (1.096), so the pitch rate should be good. Maybe a little overkill, but not underpitched. Blowoff tube...

Any way to speed up the brew day?

When I brew, 90% of the time it's in the evenings, with the bulk of it after i put the kids to bed. I try to weigh and mill grains the day before, as well as weigh out hops, then number the zip locks i put the hops into according to their hop addition. I can do all that in the living room with...

Firestone Walker Wookey Jack Clone Attempt

I brewed this up this past weekend, used S-04. I'll definitely report back on it. Had some interesting things pop up while trying to brew. Basically, Mashed in at 150, but couldn't do much until about 4 hours later. So, it sat for 4 hours, and ended at about 142 when I went to sparge. First time...

Firestone Walker Wookey Jack Clone Attempt

Well, I've got enough to make 2 batches, so maybe I'll use the S04 this time, then the WLP002 next time to compare... now I just need to find some time somewhere.

Firestone Walker Wookey Jack Clone Attempt

True, but my problem is with doing a starter before hand, since it seems every time brew day comes around, someone's sick or something else pops up. I guess technically I could put the starter in the fridge until I can brew, but then I have no idea when the next day I can brew is. :( Hence the...

Firestone Walker Wookey Jack Clone Attempt

I've got all the ingredients for this on hand, been waiting to brew it for the last month, but something always comes up when I want to brew (kids sick, wife sick, me sick, negative degree weather, that sort of crap). #RunningFarmer... you used S04 and it came out tasty. I'm debating using...

New Hop Variety: Belma- Puterbaugh Farms

I took a taster of mine tonight... Aroma was a little melon, and a little fruity. Taste was mild, but not bad. Would be good in a cream ale vs IPA, unless you throw in some galaxy or citra too. The Columbus, in retrospect, wasn't a great idea, but not a terrible beer by any means. I'll use it...

New Hop Variety: Belma- Puterbaugh Farms

I just kegged a belma IPA tonight. I used 2-row and c-15 for a base, 1.5 oz Columbus fwh, and 4 additions of 1.5 oz of belma at 20, 15, 10, and 5. Dry hopped with about 3 oz belma for 6 days. It smelled melony, almost like Granny Smith apples too, for whatever reason. Put it on 30psi gas until...

Already did that a couple times today ;-)

First boil over on first brew

Think of it as breaking in your equipment... We've all been there. It's one of the benefits of brewing in the garage-- easier to clean up than the stove top, around the stove, etc.

What your pet peeve about Brewing

I've done this the past couple times I've brewed, but only when I'm putting water into the mash tun. Still sucks, but not as much as if it were wort :-)

    Grain substitution question...

Cool. I'll try the blend of rye malt and C60. I've got C60 on hand. The recipe calls for 1.66 lb rye malt and .5 lb cararye, so I'm thinking 1.66 lb rye malt and a blend of .25 lb rye malt and .25 C60. Sound right?

    Grain substitution question...

Looking at brewing skeezer's Wooky Jack clone. My LHBS doesn't have cararye, though... Is there any substitute for this that people have used and found o be acceptable?
