Dry hopping in a muslin bag or loose in the fermenter?

I have a stainless steel mesh hop filter with a screw on lid. They're pretty neat, easy to clean and sanitise etc. Plus once I get round to kegging I hear they are good for hopping directly in the keg.

    Leftovers brew...

Ah right, I've seen this on some YouTube videos and have been meaning to get a bottle. What kind of iodine do I buy? I've seen Lugols Iodine solution at different percentages, and also iodine tincture. Which is the right one? Thanks for the help

    Leftovers brew...

Weirdly I was reading an article on Brulosophy earlier about the short and shoddy brews they have been doing. Looks pretty interesting. Quick methods for making passable brews in a short amount of time. Definitely worth a try I think.

    Leftovers brew...

This was from a couple of days ago, I brewed this already, didn't have time for a mash and after I plugged my other ingredients into beersmith it was coming out at ~7% so I left the Pilsner malt out for now. I have a kilo of Pilsen malt, was thinking of doing a partial mash "alesner" with that...

    Leftovers brew...

I brewed this yesterday, didn't have the time for a mash so just steeped the grains for 30 mins - caramel, choc, carapils and the 2 bags of kit grains I had. Took 2 hours start to finish including clean up and smelled great. Threw a couple of cups of freshly brewed coffee in (I like coffee...

    Leftovers brew...

I've got a load of leftovers from kits and other brews etc, I was thinking I could do a quick kitchen sink style extract brew tomorrow morning. Here's (some of) my inventory: One can of woodfordes Admiral's reserve (1/2 of a 2 can kit) Steeping grains for a 1 gallon stout and a 1 gallon porter...

Pushed rubber bung into demijohn! Help!

Had a little sniff of the airlock and it smells mostly of rubber bung. Might transfer this to another demijohn later but feel it might be ruined. The bungs were from Wilko I think and smell very rubbery. Think I should've transferred it right away. Lesson learnt.

Pushed rubber bung into demijohn! Help!

I accidentally pushed a rubber bung into my wine (the bung is only just big enough, but fits). It's the old orange/pink colour rubber. and they smell very "rubbery" I was swapping the tube for an airlock and pushed it in too hard, it was sanitised and just slipped in. I only started it 3 days...

    Wheat beer

Thanks for that but I never said it was a Hefe, I was actually going for a Belgian Witbier style, which this yeast can do. It's not exacly in that style and I won't be entering it into any competitions, but it contains wheat so I'm calling it a wheat beer. One of the things I love about homebrew...

    Wheat beer

Ah well, can't do anything until tomorrow anyway now. Bit of a catch 22/Schrodinger's cat at times isn't it. Had to open it to get a hydrometer reading...

    Wheat beer

I did a wheat beer on Wednesday (around 5 days ago) in a small 12L fermentation bucket. It's extract with a mini mash and I'm using Lallemand Abbaye and fermenting at 16-17C. It started fermentation within 12hrs and was pretty steady for a few days. Yesterday when I looked at it and it was...

    Christmas list

I have a good set of 0.01g accurate scales from homebrew vape liquid making. Some good ideas on here.

    Christmas list

So, with Santa coming in around 5 weeks, what's on your Christmas list? Any ideas for low cost things I can ask for from relatives? Maybe around 20 pounds? I've already told an auntie to get me any type of kit, thinking it's basically just LME and will come in handy for pimping/experimenting...

Messed up a recipe by adding UK gallons and not US gallons

Great, thanks for the help, and suggestions. [Edit - I just ran the fermentables through brewer's friend and it came out as 1.021, which was the exact amount I got from the hydrometer! As long as my other maths is sound, I should be in the ballpark]

Messed up a recipe by adding UK gallons and not US gallons

You misunderstand me, I do mean liters not gallons this time. I racked a small portion of the red ale into a second fermentation vessel, a 4.5L demijohn (carboy), from the main FV. So there is approx 4.05L of the red ale and 450ml of the new mix in there. Could you look at my numbers again...

Messed up a recipe by adding UK gallons and not US gallons

Thanks for the replies, I've learnt a lot this past week. I decided against adding any spirit alcohol, I'll save that for another test, maybe the 'oak chips soaked in spirits' method. It was eating away at me though, looking every night at those 23L of potentially weak tasting beer, so as an...

Messed up a recipe by adding UK gallons and not US gallons

So I just decided to do nothing with this, and just leave it as a low % ale, but it has been irking me over the past few days. I'm thinking of racking some of it off into either one or two 1 gallon (UK!) demijohns and experiment with it a little. I was thinking of getting some DME or LME and...
