    Serving Nitro Beers Correctly

So for equipment, if using beergas mix, if I were to go to a welding or beverage supply shop, would they give me beergas in a nitrogen tank (not a standard co2 tank?) And so, I'd need the special N2 nitro regulator in order to use that tank?

Historical Beer: Kentucky Common "Kiss Yer Cousin" Rye Kentucky Common Ale

Well said. Revvy, your thread update on Dec 2014 suggested you had high hopes for the lager yeast version of this. Any update on a taste test of the carbed steam beer version?

    Good price on Gamma Lids

After being in Florida a couple years...I miss my Menards in central WI, and stock up on cheap stuff whenever I'm up for the holidays. Have a bunch of their gamma seal lids and the green Menards bucks doing grain work. The downside to those large vittle vaults is that while a 55lb sack will...

What actually happens when mash temp decreases?

I'd guess it's more about accurate temperature measuring, and preheating your mash tun. If you're just tossing your grain and water into a cold/room temp tun, it's going to eat a lot of your heat, but you won't see it immediately. So you'll add your grain/water, measure your temp, think you're...

Anyone ever have a toe removed?

Since we've had brewmaster beard-yeast beers and whatnot before, is there a chance of passedpawn toe beer? No? Are you sure? Hey, don't ban me, it was just a joke! nooooooo

Why doesn't the hop character of my beers taste the same as commercial beers

Maybe it's worth asking about the condition of your hops? Do you keep them nicely frozen and vacuum packed until you use them? And they're relatively new/fresh? [Edit: Another FL guy beat me by a minute or two on this angle]

Does pitching more yeast EVER work?

These are good questions. I have never had a need to pitch additional yeast, but if I DID, the only method I would use is to pitch an active/live starter directly in, not just dump some stuff straight from a retail package. I can personally see some situations where an additional pitch might...

Free kegerator!...You get what you pay for...

Once you've cleaned out the bottom of a well-used keezer that hasn't seen sponge nor soap for a year, you get pretty numb to the nasties. There is some absurd amounts of evil that can grow in cold wet darkness. A wee bit of black mold wouldn't scare me in the slightest.

    Bought an STC1000 controller, wish I hadn't

There has to be some value in knowing how something works too. You built it, you know how it works, you can fix it if it breaks, you can tweak it later if you want to. Buy a Johnson controller, and it acts up or craps out...you can do nothing. I had the chance to buy an electric brewing rig on...

Is it worth it to buy bulk grains?

Maintaining an inventory of base grain AND specialty grain AND a variety of bulk hops is worth more than just the cost savings. There is nothing like the freedom of waking up and thinking 'I'm going to brew tomorrow', and knowing you probably have all the ingredients you need already in...

    Extra kegs worth having

I don't think any sane homebrewer has ever said 'boy, I wish I didn't have so many corny kegs'. I think the rule of thumb is to buy as many as you think you need, double that, then get a couple more just in case.

    Propane Burner Delima

For what its worth, Home Depot also sells the SQ14 for 49.97. If you need 2, there's also a 10 off 100 coupon floating around right now, just need a couple pennies in filler items. Also, I have 2 of these, and highly recommend them. Very sturdy, plenty of flame for big boils. It's easy to...

How tight is your grain mill set?

Any of you folks with 80% or better efficiencies ALSO conditioning your grain in advance? Or are you just milling it dry, as-is?

Drive your malt mill using a Kitchenaid

I have a pasta maker attachment for a similar KA stand mixer, but I've never used it after reading warnings that it will destroy the longevity of your motor. I fear to think what would happen after crushing 15 or 20lbs of grain, especially as frequently as I brew. Maybe for a garage sale mixer I...

    :(

I'm not sure why people think buckets are easier to store. Just because you can nest them together doesn't mean you SHOULD. I've bought a lot of homebrewer equipment leftovers off craigslist, and any time there's a bucket included, they have it packed full of junk (caps, capper, ingredients...

☕ Coffee ☕: Ingredients, Roasting, Grinding, Brewing, and Tasting

I've long wanted to try roasting beans in a popper, and for even longer have I been a coffee fanatic drinking coffee made from retail-roasted beans. For those of us on the fence...can someone actually do a comparison as to how homemade roasted coffee tastes compared to something retail? Fresher...

How many full fermenters are too many?

Is it offensive that I don't really think the 1gal fermenters count? :) I have 3x5gal 'short term' (<1 month) ferments going, and 3x5gal long term (sours) going. The short term stuff will flex between 2 and 4 at any given time, and if there's a lager or two in the mix, there might be 4 or 5...

Starter doesn't appear to have created much yeast

Did you measure the gravity of your beer so that you know it has finished? How long did you have it going on the stirplate?
