HELP! High FG Reading After Dry Hopping

Thank you so much everyone! Looks like I've got a bit of reading and refreshing to do :) Love the quick responses from the community.

HELP! High FG Reading After Dry Hopping

I was reluctant to "waste" that much of the final beer to take a FG with the hydrometer to compare, but I guess that would be the most definitive answer. You mentioned that the reading would be skewed in the refractometer, due to alcohol being present. Could you elaborate? I thought the...

HELP! High FG Reading After Dry Hopping

So I just read the SG reading of the refractometer, but yes, 11.2 is about right on the money with the BRIX side of the reading. Are you saying... If I take a measurement with a hydrometer and read the SG reading on it as 1.018, then take a refractometer reading of SG (not BRIX), it'll show...

HELP! High FG Reading After Dry Hopping

Thanks for the input. My refractometer reads in both Brix and SG. I didn't do any conversions, but just read my FG using the SG side of the refractometer reading. Both refractomer and hydrometer are showing 1.000 with filtered water, as expected. I'm not sure why there is a discrepancy...

HELP! High FG Reading After Dry Hopping

Short Story: 5 gallon extract w/ specialty steeping grains (Double IPA) 2 weeks in fermenter, SG 1.018 with HYDROMETER 2 weeks later, transferred to secondary and dry-hopped with 3oz of pellets 1 day later, SG 1.045 with REFRACTOMETER Checked calibration of hydrometer and refractometer...

Hey guys, I'm in the San Diego, CA area and looking for a welder or anyone with experience converting commercial kegs to keggles/ brew kettles.

    When it Rains, it Pours

Wow, worst brew day ever... I... -melt my auto-siphon -cut my knuckle open -burn my arm -get beer through my gas line and into the CO2 regulator -all my hops boiled-over before I could save it -accidentally get half a gallon of hose water in my boil -Find out my hefeweizen I just...

Spice, Herb, or Vegetable Beer Jalapeno Cream Ale

I just tasted mine again while bottling, and ooh wee, its a sipper, hah... I love spicey stuff, but I'm not sure many of my friends will enjoy it. I'm hoping the heat mellows out a little while it ages.

Racked on Top of Priming, Still Flat Beers

For anyone who has this problem and wants a conclusion: Patience is a virtue... They are all carbed up now. BUT, my last one of my PET Liter bottles def had A LOT more carbonation than the rest of my batch. I think I bottled that last, if I recall correctly. It also was sweeter and had...

Spice, Herb, or Vegetable Beer Jalapeno Cream Ale

Yeah, I'm not quite sure why the vodka soaking step is in place if we are first roasting the jalapenos, which would sanitize them anyways. You can go right ahead and add that vodka to your fermenter if you'd like! It'll up the alcohol content a bit and for sure increase the heat! I wonder if...

    Rust in Mash Tun

Ok, so let me start of with: Yes, I'm dumb for doing this... ...moving on. I had built a mash tun out of a cooler for my first all-grain batch. There were no SS washers available at Lowes or Home Depot at the time, so I grabbed some regular steel ones, I think maybe zinc coated? I can't...

Spice, Herb, or Vegetable Beer Jalapeno Cream Ale

I just racked mine to secondary, and thought I'd share my experience so far. This was my first all-grain, so... a few things need to be tweaked next time, haha. To begin with, I followed the recipe pretty much to spec. I did use Nottingham Ale yeast instead, and also used 5 jalapenos...

Thanks Revvy, I'll let experience trump my noobish impatient thoughts.

Racked on Top of Priming, Still Flat Beers

Hmm.. that first six pack I chilled and took with me was stored in a six pack holder and not in a 24 case box surrounded with other beers. That 6 pack was carbed up, the rest it seems aren't. I guess that would account for a bit of different temperature. The more I think about it, the more it...

Racked on Top of Priming, Still Flat Beers

Revvy, I see what you are saying, but.. All my bottles were stored together in the same room, in 24 case boxes. Thinking about it now, its probably been 4 weeks since bottling. It is a pretty high gravity beer 6.5% (I know they are supposed to take longer to carb). To me, it seems it didn't...

Racked on Top of Priming, Still Flat Beers

Hey folks. So I have this dilemma. I have a solution as well. But I would also like some advice and thoughts to round off my experiences. So I brewed a pumkin wheat ale. I created my priming sugar as normal, 5/8 cup of table sugar, boiled in 1-2 cups water for 10 minutes with some extra...

Pumpkin Pie Spices Sinking to Bottom

The spices were all new from the store, but I honestly did.t look at the date. I found another issue that tied everything together. A couple of my bottles ended up being flat. It seems my priming solution didn't mix properly. I didn't bother to make sure the priming solution had cooled down to...

Pumpkin Pie Spices Sinking to Bottom

Thanks. Maybe that spice tea works a lot more effeciently than just adding it the way I did. There is always next year... Lol.
