HOWTO - Make a BrewPi Fermentation Controller For Cheap

scoobyd63, I had to use the digital interface for mine as well. I figured the reason was due to the OneWire libraries for Arduino that I am using to test my configuration were coded to use the digital side. Maybe the BrewPi "image" has it's own code for accessing the OneWire devices. I...

YAY! First Successful Brew Day Under My Belt

I didn't taste anything that would be considered buttery, however the texture was oily and it persisted until I drank some water.

YAY! First Successful Brew Day Under My Belt

Okay, after two weeks in the bottle. (I know it is young...) There is a slick feeling on the tongue that persists well after the swallow. I don't perceive any off flavors just this texture. Any guidance?

    Sanity Check Please...

The kit instructions didn't specify a FG. They have links to the promash analysis however, it didn't specify a FG either. It's been fermenting since 9-10 which means we will be at the three week mark on Saturday.

YAY! First Successful Brew Day Under My Belt

Quick note: after fermenting for 20 days I tested the FG whcih wound up 1.021. Of course we tried it and the taste was fantastic. I am looking forward to bottling and once conditioned I think it will be a great beer.

    Question about Yeast

I can say that the yeast is indeed fine, I have a second batch that is fermenting like crazy right now using this yeast.

    Sanity Check Please...

We took our first hydrometer check tonight and it is sitting at 1.021 @ 68 degrees. The taste was great! This seems to be the average FG reading from what I have found on the interwebs. Does anyone have any notes on what their FG was for the Caribou Slobber? We are hoping to have our first...

    Sanity Check Please...

The OG was slightly higher than the recipe estimated at 1.064. I've not taken a gravity reading since due to not wanting to accidentally mess something up. If it is normal and I monkey around and infect it I would be ticked.

    Sanity Check Please...

Oh and the "ring" of bubbles there seems to match the divot in the better bottle and I'm not really worried about an infection or anything nasty going on.

    Sanity Check Please...

I brewed my first batch which is the NB kit, Caribou Slobber on 9/10 and feel like I did everything pretty cleanly. I am concerned that I may have pitched the yeast too hot. I neglected to take a temp reading before pitching the yeast. The yeast I used was the Wyeast 1332 Northwest Ale...

    First brew

Now comes the waiting... and multiple trips to peek at the fermentation chamber and multiple visits to your online store for your next ingredient kit and multiple trips to peek at the fermentation chamber .... you get the drift. If you are like me you will come up with half a dozen projects...

    My Fermentation Chamber Build

I'm not running it below 64 at the moment, as I have an ale in there percolating away. When I first built the chamber I had it at 45, but didn't get it any lower and I hadn't considered testing for cold crash capabilities.

    My Fermentation Chamber Build

I'm sitting beside it as we type, and it is off and remains off for quite a while. I have my temp difference set to 4 degrees so it will fluctuate 4 degrees to the hot side before kicking on. I insulated it with double layers and left an air-gap between layers and it seems to maintain great...

    Another Fermentation Chamber Build

I wound up caulking mine, but I would like to seal some other areas up for expansion later down the road. My insulation was not silver like yours it was this very slick pink stuff. The foil stuck to the wood but not it. Oh well :)

    My Fermentation Chamber Build

You are correct, the enclosure that I used was an old external CD-ROM housing. Computer components are designed to run off of 12V DC and 5V DC so the enclosure had the appropriate power built in. If you dont have one handy you can purchase a variable "Wall-wart" from your local big box store...

    Another Fermentation Chamber Build

Nice build you've got there. On your build do you have a problem with the foil tape slowly unsticking itself from the insulation? I had mine taped up and all of the tape eventually peeled loose.
