    Wort Chiller

For my last batch, which was the first use of my immersion chiller, I ran ice water from my cooler conversion mash tun through the chiller. The chiller output went into a bucket, which I dumped back into the mash tun containing ice water. It took a little over 20 minutes from immersion to 80...

5 gallon kit only nets 43 bottles?

Don't forget to account for your hydrometer readings. Every time you make a reading, that's beer that won't be bottled in the end.

+1 Bristol Brewing, especially the Lauging Lab.

Whats the best Beer you have had out of a Can?

+1 for Dale's Pale Ale. One of the best beers ever for me, as you can see from my sig, was when I was deployed to Iraq. Having been stationed in Germany, I was in a beer drinker's paradise. But, because of a beautiful little regulation, something we liked to call General Order No. 1...

    Basement Brew Pub

Rvklein, be honest. Every time you enter the basement, you proudly scan the room. With a pleased smile, you place your hands on your hips, throw your head back, and man-bark like Tim Allen. You are indeed building a awesome homebrew pub!

    Counterflow Chiller Tutorial

McMaster has the 1/2 x 1/4 reducing coupling for $1.05 ea. http://www.mcmaster.com/#wrot-copper-tube-fittings/=dkbmjr Grainger has several NIBCO reducing couplings, but, for one, they cost more than McMaster. The other thing is that it's not clear whether these are the right couplings. 5P186...

    Fitting brushes

I'm reading up on building a CFC, based on the one found at https://www.homebrewtalk.com/wiki/index.php/How_to_make_a_Counter_Flow_Chiller. All the necessities are crystal clear, but it assumes experience in soldering pipe. I've seen plenty on This Old House and whatnot, but I haven't a clue...

    fiberglass tanks for homebrewing?

I found this on CL from a search for 'homebrewing.' Spun fiberglass tanks. http://washingtondc.craigslist.org/nva/for/2499932286.html. He/she suggests use in biodiesel or homebrewing. Would anybody ever use fiberglass? Not as a fermentation vessel, surely.:cross:

    concrete fermenters??

This is why you need to buy a house on at least three acres. Then SWMBO won't care what you do on that acre she allots you. The Portuguese use granite vats, called lagers, for crushing grapes that go into Port. Still, they don't ferment in there, but build one and you can say you lagered...

Related to this all, will a soldering iron be sufficient, or will I need a torch for the soldering connections?

    copper tubing questions

How much concern is there over the type of copper? M, L, and K can be used for domestic water. DWV is for drainage, waste, and ventilation, and I don't know if that's recommended for domestic water. The wild card is "utility / general purpose." Anybody know the guidelines for general purpose...

Don't Stick Your Head in your primary fermenter and take a deep breath!

I checked on my first batch the other morning. It felt like snorting 7-up. Who needs coffee when you have an active fermenter to clear away the cobwebs? Funny thing is I should have known better. While working at a winery one harvest, we had to take turns climbing into the giant fermenters...

    copper tubing questions

I'm looking at different wort chiller configurations. For starters, I'll just go with the basic single coil immersion chiller. The question is the diameter for the tubing and the time it takes to do the job. How much of a difference is there between 1/2'' outer diameter and 3/8' OD? One...

    Brew newb in DC area

Hiya HBT. I just started brewing this week. The batch may have finished a little worse for wear, but I had fun anyway. I've got my next extract kit planned, and I've already got my sites set on all-grain. And an immersion wort chiller is on the drawing board. Making and drinking beer...

    New to Brew

Cheers, SticksBrewer! I was right there with ya on the 4th. Funny, my first batch took 6 hours, too. It sounds like your batch was a little more successful than mine. Lesson of the day: Don't forget to check your spigot before you siphon!
