    1st hard cider attempt

Hey thanks a lot dinnerstick. I am glad to know that your cider keeps for a year. I am feeling pretty good about my batch.

    1st hard cider attempt

So I am fairly new to this. I pressed 10 gal. of cider. I added about 8 lbs. of sugar to the cider to bring the SG to 1.090. I pitched a champagne yeast. I plan on stopping the fermentation at 1.010 using campden tabs. That should leave the ABV around 10.6%. I saved 2 gal. of the 10 gal. To add...

Anybody ever heard of "Golden Hops" Humulus lupulus Aureus?

I made a braggott a few years back and I threw about 4oz. in at the last 5 min. of the boil. It turned out great. It worked well as a flavoring hop. I wasn't sure what to expect for bittering. Does anyone know of a way to test the IBU of a hop?

    What's wrong with my goldings?

I can't be positive, but it looks like aphid to me. They can be really hard to see sometimes because they are small and the same color as your hops. They like to hang out on new tender growth. Then when they suck on it it grows all deformed, very similar to what your condition looks like. Did...

    Spot That Hop Disease!

That definitely does not look like slug/snail damage to me. They tend to leave gaping holes with no netting left. Also it seems improbable that a slug would climb up the gnarly stems of a hop plant.

    American vs. English

A week ago I brewed my first 10 gallon all grain batch. I separated the wort into two separate carboys. One was a 6 gallon, one was a 6.5 gallon. I used two different yeast strains. One was an American, one was an English. They were both Wyeast smack packs. I let both packs sit on the counter...

To blow-off, or not to blow-off?

Thanks for all the suggestions. I've never thought about using a 1" blow off. That's huge. Does it work well? I ended up using a 1/2" ID tubing shoved over the base of my airlock.

To blow-off, or not to blow-off?

So I was planning on setting up a blow-off tube on my glass carboys, however the tubing that I purchased was the wrong diameter and would not fit on my airlocks. My beer has been fermenting for two days now and the krausen is trying to escape out the top of the airlock. Is it too late to...
