    Gravitational mystery

Hi all, Trying to figure out what my problem was on a recent brew. I've narrowed down the possibilities, but I could use some other brewing perspective to avoid this problem in the future. Waaay back in May 2012 I brewed an ordinary bock, but life, travel, and work intervened to the point...

    Johnson Controls Modification

I've got a Johnson Controls A419 for my mini-fridge and I am using it to ferment a lager. The problem I'm having is that I've got the unit on top of the fridge, with the 4" probe dangling inside the door. I'm having a hard time checking on the lager without throwing the temps way off in the...

    Lager propgation

Hi all, I've been brewing for about a year now, with only a single lager under my belt. At the time I didn't make a starter and just shelled out some ridiculous amount of cash for four white labs vials of a lager strain. Can't remember which off hand, though I've written it down at home...

    The Archaeology of Beer

Hi guys, Haven't been on here recently. Haven't brewed recently. Real life (money and school) keep getting in the way. On the topic of money and school, I spent the winter break between the Fall 2011 and Spring 2012 semester teaching a 3-week class, "The Archaeology of Beer" to about 25...

Visiting the girlfriends family in Austin over Christmas. Im looking to take some good brews back east with me. Any recommendations? I know its not Texas but Deschutes doesnt distribute in my neck of the woods, so Ive been loading up on them, for example. Is there any Pliny to be had in the Lone...

Altbier. Please explain it to me.

I have done quite a bit of research on altbier, including Ray Daniel's book, J.Z.'s book and podcast concerning the style, and anything else I could get my hands on including a Michael Jackson article and I even found a (purported) clone of Zum Uerige. It seems that generally modern breweries...

    Shopping for SWMBO

My SWMBO is awesome. I've had relationships in the past, not a lot, but I feel pretty confident that my SWMBO is a one in a million find. As such, I'd like to keep her at least content with me so that I dont lose her. :drunk: That makes brewing pretty risky. She finds it rather annoying. :p...

What does your airlock smell like?

At the moment, I'm fermenting a porter with european ale yeast. LHBS was out of the london ale yeast I wanted. I'm sure it will be tasty, but the airlock right now smells like burned poop. Serves me right for sniffing it. What are you fermenting and what does it smell like? Cheers :mug:

    Stratification of dissolved solids?

Yes, I know that it's technically not possible for a true solution to have stratification of the dissolved solids, as the essence of dissolution is a regular and equal amount of the dissolved solid throughout the liquid, regardless of where in the liquid a sample is drawn, but empirical data...

    2012-13 Fantasy Hockey

Okay guys, it's time to turn our thoughts to the upcoming NHL season. It will be upon us soon enough. Who's up for some fantasy hockey this fall/winter/spring? I know I am. It annoys the crap out of SWMBO. http://games.espn.go.com/fhl/leagueoffice?leagueId=7056 This is an invite-only...

    Stupid style/keg (force) carbing question

Okay, I've got my kegging stuff together, it has all been cleaned out, sanitized, checked for leaks and everything. I'm ready to roll with a scottish 80/-. Here's the problem. My brewing software says that to carb to style, I need to carb to 1.0 volume of CO2. In other words, it...
