    Grain/starch/sugar. Corn is opposite?

Sweet corn and field corn are two very different types of corn. Sweet corn has been specifically bred to be unnaturally sweet during kernel fill stage known as the "milk stage". It is what we think of when we picture corn on the cob or canned corn. We pick sweet corn far before it is mature...

Hard water vs Soft water vs Beer style

The US varies widely on how residents get water. Urban and suburban dwellers nearly all get water from the city municipal water supply. Outside of those areas it could be a mixture of municipal water supply piped out of the incorporated limits, a county water supply, a self supported water...

Hard water vs Soft water vs Beer style

Unless he's on a private well. Not sure about his area, but where I live everyone who lives outside of a larger town or city are all on private wells. Even a lot of villages around me have private wells for all residences. He didn't provide that info in the OP.

    Frozen Beer

Thaw it out and try it. Nothing to lose. FWIW, I used to keep my homebrew in my barn fridge and it would freeze rather regularly during cold snaps. I never had "bad" beer after it thawed.

    "Vomit" wheat mash question

Fusarium head blight has been a concern over the last couple of years. It's side effect is commonly known as "vomitoxin". It has an off smell, and can cause vomiting, fever, etc in animals and humans that consume it. You may have picked up a batch of wheat that had higher than acceptable...

Is this kit good and what is a reasonable price to pay?

I've never seen a gas supply store do exchanges on customer owned CO2 tanks. My local places all fill up (welding/gas supply stores). The places around here do extended leases on bottles, though I'm not sure about 5# size. For example, my 80 cf argon/CO2 welding mixture, 125 cf 02 and 300 cf...

Weevil in grain - Dump or brew?

I feed them to my chickens. They love spent grain.

What do we enjoy about brewing - the process, the results or the tinkering?

An admirable goal. But, why - at all costs? Is it personal satisfaction? Competition? Goal of opening your own brewery? What makes you tick as a brewer? I'm looking for some introspection and a grasp on the current zeitgeist of where homebrewing is (at least this forum). When I only...

What do we enjoy about brewing - the process, the results or the tinkering?

Admittedly, I don't post a lot. Additionally, I'm not an every month brewer and my visits to this forum wax and wane in proportion to my brewing regularity. That being said, I have been brewing for the better part of two decades and started out where many of us have - with some extract, a...

    What are you drinking now?

Rhinegeist Calfe. A coffee milk stout. Prior to that I was drinking a Rattleskull. 1 bottle porter, 1 bottle hard cider, a shot (or two) of rum, a dash of lime juice and nutmeg. It'll rattle your skull in the morning.

Best type of filter for a DIY mash tun?

I feel ya. It took me a while to learn that just spending the extra $20 saved me money in the long run. I didn't have to buy inferior equipment, then buy what I should have in the first place. I have a long history of being a tight ass, so it was difficult. :D

Best type of filter for a DIY mash tun?

I too have a slotted copper manifold. Used in a blue rectangular coleman 48 qt cooler. I've never had a stuck sparge. I am currently thinking about building a mash tun out of an old round cooler my dad gave me. I might use a copper manifold, or I might try out my rusty TIG skills and weld up...

    Cooler mash tun bulkhead

One of my mash tuns is a cheap, used blue Coleman. I could never get it to seal correctly, whether I tightened it up, loose, teflon on the threads, etc. I eventually decided to get some food grade silicon and essentially caulk the leak closed. I have never had a problem with that cooler...

Help! Mast Tun Cooler won't stop leaking

I just use food grade silicone caulk to seal up my mash tun. Works like a charm.

    So who's brewing this weekend?

Going to brew tomorrow. A simple SMASH. First brew of the new year. First all grain brew. And it will be my first "personal" brew in over a year. Life happens and sometimes gets in the way of our hobbies. Had a new child (4 is a bit hectic) and got 3 people into brewing. So I have...

    Distilled/boiled water or tap water?

I have used store bought spring water occasionally in the past. I have a well, but it is very shallow (less than 20 feet) and sunk into pit run (glacial outwash that underlies alot of the area around creeks here). Lots of sediment and off tasting, combined with iron bacteria contamination...

    Reinheitsgebot double standard

Yep. But do whatever floats your boat. By being in the business of making and selling beer, breweries actually have as much if not more interest in branching out and trying new beers and new flavors than the average homebrewer. The point of their existence is to make money and/or good beer...
